Which one would you choose? Giant or Cannondale?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I say Giant, but I'm biased.

Edit:

I said that without reading what you said. If you can get the same bike for much less.. get the Cannondale. It's just a name. They're both great brands.

This link will take you to an article about just who makes your bike and where it was made.

Maybe it will help you with your choice.
Either way let us know your pick and why.

What I like about the Cannondale it says "handmade in USA"
I dont know how important that is but lately you hear about these bikes made in Taiwan. Well this apparently not.

Hey fungirl, it doesn't matter where they were made, they are both good bikes. Which one are you leaning toward?

I'd say go with the Cannondale. It's around $500 you'll be saving.

The group that's on it has hardly changed over the past years. I'm running Tiagra on a 2002 OCR which is nearly similar to the current Tiagra hardware. Most difference in the current and the old group will be found in its weight.

Though, if you want to be cool like me, and have $500 laying around, get the Giant.

My two cents....if you've taken test rides on both bikes and find them equally comfortable, buy the one that catches your eye and will motivate you to get out of the house and ride. There's nothing wrong with something as simple as aesthetics helping tip your decision.

Time I test rode a Cannondale, I thought it stiff. Among the two though, I'd choose a Cannondale.. My real choice, a Litespeed. I have not bought a new bike in about 5 years. I deserve it..

Like someone else said, I'd go with the Cannondale and use the savings to upgrade the Tiagra components.

Cannondale. I just can't get past the fact that Giant also makes (or made) lots of low end crap bikes.

Even if the Cannondale isn't US made (the newer ones aren't, except for CAAD9s I believe), you're still being patriotic because you live in Canada, and Cannondale is owned by Dorel?

Cannondale is owned by a company that makes lots of low end crap bikes. Giant makes low to high end bikes and puts their brand on everything. Not saying one is better than the other but the days of USA Made C'dale bikes are coming to an end. Their new stuff is cranked out of a plant in Asia that probably makes Hello Kitty bikes for 3 year olds.

Cannondale is used, I can see that now. The bike store actually does not carry Cannondale at all, so there must be a story why they sell it here for 800 dlrs. Riding it, I could hear the chain clunking a bit until i switched gears. Hmmm...

How come I never get this kind of love when asking which bib shorts I should buy?

OP, which ever bike you decide on, you're going to want something better next year. So my advice is pull out the credit card and go with the TCR Advanced with full Dura Ace and avoid buyers remorse.
Flip the stem and you basically have the Avail with shorter chain stays and headtube. Your body will learn to adjust to the more agressive fit and as an added bonus you'll be the envy of all your friends, neighbors and fellow riders on your local group rides.
And that's what it's really all about.

Hmmm.... indeed. did they say they can tune it up or what they think it is? Maybe it's a rental thing??

What's with the rental thing?
If a bike shop is selling a bike, new or used, it should be near perfectly tuned and ride without "clunking".
More reason to go with the TCR Advanced....or the Avail.
But don't dismiss the Defy either.
