Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why do people do this?

You show someone your bike and the first thing they do is immediately grab the front end of the saddle.

I've never seen it either, but do they then proceed to pick the bike up to see how heavy it is?

I've never thought about it that way. But thinking of it, when they put their hands on it, they don't put their hands on the bars, they take the front end of the saddle, and walk around it from there. Kind of groce...

As long as they aren't smelling it you should be cool.

I dunno, maybe 'cause fingerprints don't show up as easy on saddle material.

Could be. Though when you go to the toilet you wash your hands afterwards. Basically they're touching your crutch, and don't wash their hands afterwards.

never thought of that as an issue, its kinda gross but thats it. Plenty of people hand they're bikes by the saddle nose for quick repairs or triathlon starts sometimes. In fact the bike shop I bought my bike at did this.

This makes sense. I'm pretty sure I'm guilty (though very unconsciously) of doing this before.

Bikes: Three road bikes. Two track bikes.

I think waaayyy too much thought is being put into this. If people stopped thinking about their crotch so much, we'd probably solve world hunger and find a cure for cancer in no time flat.

Well, think about where you place your hands, before you put them on the bars. Is there really that much of a difference?

Bikes: two wheeled ones

huh?

I had no idea this was a problem. I hold bikes by the saddle all the time, it's convenient.

Unless the bike in question is ridden by a naked rider, I don't think one need worry about handling the saddle.

I'd rather have them grab my saddle than have them leave finger prints on my toptube after grabbing it with their filthy hands!

I always thought they grabbed the top tube first and lifted it to see how much (or how little) it weighs.

I don't mind if I do it personally.

But grabbing someone elses' bike like that is like grabbing months of accumulated taint sauce.

and then they wipe their nose afterwards.
