Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah I've seen most of that stuff. I found plenty of info and reviews on the Trek but not much on the Fuji. Originally I was leaning more towards the Trek but I think this thread has me leaning more towards the Fuji at this point.

Wear a fluorescent jersey with plenty of 3m tape if you want to stand out....it wouldn't matter if one had a bright orange bike, the majority of motorists wouldn't give a $h!t.

The Fuji looks cooler and I'm pretty sure both frames come from the Taiwan. I vote Fuji.

Are both bikes being sold by the same LBS? If so which one do they recommend? If not which LBS do you prefer?

The 09 trek has a very sturdy frame but is VERY light. So think about that. However there are trade offs such as down graded components. But the components can be changed later on if you want. You are basically buying a Showroom model. how you customize it is where it shines! I have 1000 miles on my 08 in the last 2 months. NO problem.

Let me know if you have any questions. glad to help.
you know, if you could explain why hydroforming aluminum is superior as a manufacturing method this statement might be believable!

oh and it's pedal*

The Roubaix has better components but it's 23.67 lbs according to the website? That's pretty heavy but if since it's used for commuting i guess it won't matter since hybrid bikes are usually around the 25 mark.

I don't know so much about the Trek, except in my opinion, a sloping top tube gives a more relaxed position than the traditional straight top tube. That's just how I am.

If i was going to get a bike for commuting, i would choose the Trek just because I know i would feel more comfortable. The components don't really matter since i'm not racing.

I don't think I would choose the Roubaix unless i would have money to upgrade the parts because that's pretty much what's weighing the bike down.

It's still up to you though, so good luck and i'm sure you'll be happy with your decision.

Fujis are just a really good value. A couple people on the forum have had trouble with them breaking, but same with Trek owners...

+1. Bike brands don't mean crap.

There's a whole lot of disinformation in this thread.

indeed the lines of branding are mostly blurry. devotion to a brand is pretty much folly, devotion to a good LBS is a better idea.

Where was my bike made?

So I just got back from looking at the 2 bikes again. The place selling the Trek is right down the street from my work so I went there first. Originally I tried a 58 and it felt a bit small, the 60 felt right but the bars were to far away. While they were holding the Trek for me they swapped out a shorter stem and adjusted the brakes and derailleurs since it didn't shift real well on the first ride. The bike felt alot better and fit alot better with the shorter stem, I liked the ride and fit so I started focusing on components and stuff like that. It was a compact (2 gears up front) but it still had a 3 position derailleur for the front. While sitting there playing the the brakes I noticed the actual metal would flex considerably with just slight pressure on the brake levers, that made me alittle uneasy so i gave them a couple good yanks and pop, the bracket holding the cable to the caliper(? do they still call them calipers on non disk applications?) broke and the rear brakes didn't work anymore. The shifters I didn't like at all, it had the stupid thumb shifters. The frame is awesome, it's a very light weight bike, it feels quick and agile, accelerates well but considering the 1.5 is the top end of the 1 series it comes with crap for components. I don't what they offer in the 1.1 and 1.2 but it can't downgrade much, maybe lose the carbon front fork?

I left straight from there to other bike shop to check out the Fuji again. I tried the 61 Fuji and it they recommended trying the 58, they didn't have one there so I went to their other location. The 58 Fuji felt good, no more or less comfortable then the Trek but it had a little farther back riding position but it also had a little more aggressive seating position. The Fuji had better, levers, shifters, brakes, and front and rear derailleurs. Like the Trek it has the carbon front fork but it also had carbon rear seat stays, but more carbon and better components it was still just a little heavier then the Trek (maybe it was in my head, just going off feel of picking up each bike with an hour in between) I'm thinking it's because of heavier duty/weight wheels, it was obvious right off the bat that the wheels on the Fuji had at least twice as many spokes. The stem was reversible for an inch difference in bar height and the riser had spacers, you can shift them around to further adjust bar location, it seemed to have alot more tweakability right out of the box for getting it properly fitted.

I ended up buying the Fuji. It's paid for, but they still have it, they are doing all the final adjustments tonight, re-wrapping the bars in black instead of the white (the white was dirty from hands and stuff on the floor, they offered to redo it for free, I asked for black) Then I go in tomorrow if I get the chance or Monday to get it personally fitted to me while on a trainer. The $45 dollar gift is not quite what I said. You pay $30 to become a something or other member for a year and you get a free subscription to bicycle magazine for a year and you get 10% of whatever you spend back as store, So I had to pay $30 to get a $75 gift card. Best part is they have a 30 day money back guarantee, as long as I don't wreck it they will take it back for a full refund within 30 days if I'm not happy with it, hell even if I do wreck it I can still return it for a full refund minus the parts to fix it.

Check back Monday or Tuesday, I'll have pics

Thanks guys, I'm really excited. It's gonna be an awesome year outdoors. I just got back on Sunday from Colorado skiing 5 resorts in 5 days, my girlfriend and I are taking a Tennessee mountain biking trip this summer, my best friend just a got a new Supra ski boat for his lake, I'm doing the warrior dahs, muddy buddy ride and run, Chicago marathon, and now I have a new road bike to play with. I can't wait for warmer weather and more daylight.

Also on the note of comparing the bikes, I would like to add if I was intending to modify and upgrade I would have went with the Trek, I feel like it's a better platform to build off of but the cheap components would have to go. And for whoever was asking about the countries of origin, The Fuji was made in Taiwan, the Trek was made in China.

That's not even close to correct. I bought an 09 Fuji Roubaix, and it weighed in at 20lbs 8oz with some heavy platforms on it. I changed pedals in a couple of days. I've basically upgraded every part and it weighs 17lbs 14oz right now, and that's with a 61cm frame.

Anyway, congrats on the purchase. I have a serious case of upgraditis when it comes to bikes. I already changed everything on the MTB so I had to change everything on this, too. I got everything on sale so I got good deals, and I've got money back from selling all the original components.

If you don't plan on upgrading parts it's still a great bike for the money, but change the saddle and stock brakes pads. The saddle just hurts, and the stock pads are horrible. If you can find a deal on better tires I would change them soon because I was flatting them like crazy. I haven't had a flat since I changed the tires. Other than that just get out and ride it.
