should handlebars and stem be the same brand?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I like to keep matching stems, posts, and bars on my bikes. It's a total waste of funds, but creates a more factory look instead of a cobbled parts bike look.

For functionality absolutely not, as many people find the combination of angles and lengths and looks to work better than a paired set. That being said, normally it does look nicer if it is with the stem/hb they are designed for.

Pretty sure my specialized is all specialized stuff but I just put Easton EA70 bars and stem on my giant this past winter. I am glad I went with the set as it does look nicer than anything else I could have picked out.

Though if you REALLY want the looks, you could always sand the stem/bars/seatpost and give it a new coat of paint.

I'm more particular about matching my seatpost and stem. I'm running Thomson post/stem and 3T Rotundo Pro bars. Mismatched stem/post look weird.

doesn't everyone? when I can't find a match to a sock, the sock then gets sent to the chain cleaning pile.

since no one has given the op a facepalm, i'll do the honors

unless you are a sponsored rider getting freebies, it doesn't matter. that being said, i'll be getting a ritchey stem for my ritchey handlebar. the c-dale c3 handlebar that i'm currently using will then be paired with the cheapest ergo bar i can find for my beater bike
