Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Front Derailer

Hi, I just bought a very nice, low mileage 2003 Cannondale R600 CAAD5 bike with dura ace everything except the front derailer, which is ultegra. Do you guys think that I should upgrade it to dura ace?

Is the derailleur broken? If not, don't waste the $50-$100. Who cares that it is Ultegra? It works just the same and it doesn't weigh but mere ounces more.

No need to change it out. Just keep the Ultegra it is good enough.

Put a little piece of silver tape over Ultegra.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Can you say the same thing about the motor?

Is it a museum piece or your everyday ride? Ultegra FD may have been the original part. Cannondale's archive doesn't go back that far so finding original spec might be tough. I doubt an r600 had dura ace as original spec anyway.l

FDs are often down-spec from the rest of the components on the bike because they are so unimportant.

Don't do it. It won't make a bit of difference.
