Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A Humanitarian Point

Ever wonder why there are so few famous cyclists from Africa? Perhaps it's because even the top cyclists have to worry about paying for basic things that we rarely have to worry about.

I just ran into this website: https://teamrwanda.org/

If you click on a team member, say https://teamrwanda.org/Adrien-Niyonshuti , and scroll down, you'll see that there is a donation button for things like medical insurance, english lessons, portable showers, etc. It surprises me that some of the top cyclists on the entire continent don't have their medical insurance covered, but I guess that's the state of things down there.

Anyhow, I'm not going to ask you internet strangers to donate money or anything, I just wanted to "spread some awareness", whatever that means. If you do donate, that's great though. I'm sure there's plenty more websites like this one that you could contribute too also.

One more note: their team bikes are Schwinn Pelotons.

There was an article in Bicycling Mag maybe 6 months ago about why there are almost no African cyclists.

Do we really need to ask why there aren't many African cyclists?

We really do need to be told everything here on BF

It's an expensive sport relative to running or soccer and Africa is dirt poor.
