Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Out with the Old, In with the New

So my 2008 Trek Pilot fell off my carrier on Tuesday (I'm told it works better if you actually fasten the straps) and was run over by a Semi. RIP. One year and just under 5000 miles. You served me well.

Well today I ordered a new 2010 Cannondale Carbon Synapse with full Dura Ace Sould be here April 3rd! Can't wait.

Excuse me, but

(I'm laughing at how you described it, not the fact that your bike got run over. I just appreciate dry humor.)

I hope you enjoy the new bike! I just got a new one this year, and the anticipation of that first ride is always fun. I hope you have great weather for the maiden voyage!

"Semi-okay" I see what you did there. Clever

The truck sustained no observable damage. He was right behind me and saw the bike come off the rack. The bike wedged between the concrete and the front axle of the cab.

Ya know, you don't have to throw your bike under a semi just to upgrade. some people just keep the old bike, or sell it.

Sad story, but at least there is a happy ending.

And also - this is EXACTLY why I ALWAYS throw the U Lock on when I am carrying my bike. The U lock is my backup strap

No. The results were remarkably unremarkable. Handlebars sheared 1/4 of the way off. Pedals sheared off. Saddle and seat bag gone (recovered the next day though on the shoulder of the freeway), Front wheel shredded, rear spindle shreadded. Bike shop said frame is undoubtably comprimised and bike totaled. Good news is home owners insurance covered it less my deductable.

I now have two new policies when it comes to strapping on the bike: 1) Strap on the bike instantly upon returning from the ride and announce outloud "Bike is strapped in" and 2) double check the straps and carrier before turning the ignition key (even when I know I strapped it in).
