Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

GT Road Bikes

A local bike shop has 2 brand new 2001 GT ZR series bikes in my size, which they bought very cheap after the GT's bankrupcy. One is the ZR 1.0, which is 6061 Aluminum frame with a Carbon Fork and full dura ace (asking $1500). The other is the ZR 2.0, which is a different aluminum with a Carbon Fork and full ultegra (asking $1000). Does anyone have any experience with either of these bikes? Do you think that this is a good deal on a 9 year old bike, even though they are brand new. Thanks.

$1500 for 9sp DA and $1000 for 9sp ultegra (assuming nothing has been changed) is more than I would pay. maybe the ultegra is almost fair, but if they're both 9sp... no way.

for a hint, a decent 10sp 2010 bike will cost you around $1400.

If we're talking USD.

I have no experience with the GT road bikes, but own a GT MTB frame that has been very good.

Prices are way too high for bikes of that age.

AFAIK GT is back in business, but I don't know who owns/makes them now. I was looking at a road frame with disk brakes they had listed for sub $1k for a time before I found my Trek.

That's a lot for a 9 year old bike, no wonder they still have them in stock. I would find something else. You can get a BMC with full Rival from Competitive Cyclist right now for $1700, or a CAAD 9 5 for $1500 (retail). 9 years is a long time in the cycling world.

Can you link some pics? If you really want one of the GTs, I would say $500 for the Ultegra model and $700 for the DA model sounds good.

Gt

These bikes are 9 years old, but they are brand new. Do you still think that they are too much money?

In my opinion, yes. I'm sure they are still nice bikes, so here is what I would do. Ride the $1000 dollar GT, then ride a new road bike in the same price range at the same shop, and do the same for the $1500 GT (provided they have other road bikes in that range). Or, go to another shop and test ride new road bikes between $1000 and $1500. Remember what you liked/disliked about the GTs and compare it to the newer ones. Compare weights, fit, geometry, shifting, handling, etc.

After all this, if you like the old GTs better, then go for one, but definitely talk them down. Way down.

GT was bought by the same company that owns Raleigh, CCM, Cannondale and Schwinn. Dorel/Pacific.
If I remember correctly.

A little shopping around can get you a much better deal. I support LBS's but that BMC on CC looks like a nice bike and there are lots of BMC fans on this site. You can also get one of those Neuvation CF bikes for around $1,500 with Rival or the alu version of the Neuvation with rival for a couple hundred less. The Neuvation bikes are supposed to be around 15 lbs or so (if I recall correctly). I've never seen one in person so I can't speak to the quality or ride.

GT is out of business (brand has been bought by another company, Dorel I believe, same as Cannondale, Schwinn, etc.) and I doubt those frames have a warranty. Also, I've seen new GT's at Performance for less than that price with full warranty (not Ultegra but the new 105 is pretty nice).

Don't buy just for the deal. Get a bike that fits you and meets your needs but don't just buy because you are getting a huge % discount off of original MSRP.

Nine years old? Really? I would ask the shop to repack every bearing on the bike and replace the tubes and tires at the very least.

Yes. They are fine bikes and 9 speed is more reliable but they are overpriced by todays standards. How long has the LBS been hanging on to these bikes? There is something they talked about in business school called the time value of money.

What would you offer?

What would you guys offer? I am most interested in the ZR 1.0, b/c it has a better frame and components.

I had a ZR 2.0 from 2001. Mine was blue/white. 9spd with a Mavic mid range wheel set

It was a nice bike, but road harsh compared to my current bike. Full aluminum frames are not on the top of most peoples lists when spending 1500+

I believe most here are asking you to compare first with other brands/makes and get the 'big picture'. Set a benchmark elsewhere that you could compare to the 2 GTs offered you. You are in that budget range to get real good deals. There are already suggestions in thse post alone.

You mentioned the ZR1 as being better to the other 9-year old bike but how does it compare to 2010 component/frame standards?
