Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was coasting down a 6% grade once and nearly came to a standstill. Wind gusts were over 50mph.

That was a very dramatic account of gravity, but your spelling sucks. Still.

I normally ride south, turn around, and come back on my daily ride. The last week or two, there's been a wind out of the south. So I've had a couple of times when I zipped up a little hill faster than I've ever gone up, and actually accelerated while going up it. Wind does have its good side.

Cool! Today I went downhill and had to pedal to maintain 8 mph. Aren't 20 + mph headwinds fun????

Is it possible that you were riding your brakes and maybe dragging your feet too?

You do realise treadmills are meant to stay still right?

Today I found myself working to maintain 11.5 mph as I descended a 3% hill. I doubt I'd be moving at all if I would have attempted coasting. The effin' wind kept me below 12mph for the vast majority of my commute, some of it even below 10mph as I struggled in 36/24 and even dropped into 36/27 on some sections.

Good thing I only ride for fun. I still won't complain if we get some decent weather.

You need a heavier bike.

stop beating up on the OP. I know exactly what pains him.

yesterday in the wind, i went down hills that i know i normally coast down at about 20 mph from an almost stationary start. I was doing about 9mph yesterday. My legs are still hurting today.

i was relieved to get back to roads with some trees instead of being totally exposed.

I'm not at all surprised that you're familiar with 8 mph.

The world seems to be very windy atm. Was going down a hill today I can normally coast right past 35mph no problem. Today was pedaling like mad and barely made it past 30mph.
