Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A-Type and B-Type Chainrings...and another question

Searched it up, no results. Got tired of the multiple times i had to "wait" 30 seconds to search again.

But while looking for the new 52t chainring I need, i encountered (multiple times) a notice that said,

"For best shifting performance, A-type rings should be used only with A-type rings, and Btype rings only with B-type rings"

I see it usually when i'm looking at Shimano chainrings. And so i have no idea what that is, or no idea how to tell. It's probably simple to most of you guys so sorry for being dumb if that's the case.

...

And i'm also wondering if it possible to install a shimano (Ultegra or 105 specifically) chainring with an FSA crankset. In other words, can i use my 52t 105 or Ultegra chainring along with my FSA 39t and 30t chainrings on the whole crankset? (That brings up the whole A-style/ B-Style thing again)

I'm very confused right now, and I need all the help i can get, my next race is on May 1, and i want to get these parts before then because with a blocked gear 9spd drivetrain and a 50t chainring, i know i'm at a disadvantage.

Thank you all very much.

EDIT: I found some things about A/B rings from Sheldon Brown's site. Apparently, Type-A is for using a 53 or 52 outer with a 42, and Type-B is for using a 53/52 outer with a 39.

Does this mean i can buy a Type B Shimano 105 52t chainring ans use it with my other chainrings, the 39 and 30t even though it's not Shimano?
