Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hit 55MPH down a hill near Chestnut Mountain ski resort in NW Illinois. I would have gone faster, but my mind told me to slow down. That was the one and only time I've ever gone faster than 40MPH.

I hit 57mph on a not terribly long but very steep descent in Dutchess County, New York. That was more than 20 years ago. Recently I haven't done anything more than 42mph. My rides are too urban/suburban now and I don't get the chance to go on roads that allow for longer uninterrupted descents. If I get in better shape I might be able to ride farther out of the city and find some places where I can do some stupid speeds again. I am not sure I really want to however...

Dudes much not be from CO or this would be posting up speeding tickets. My first at 11 years old was 49 or 50 mph in a 35 on the air force base in Colorado Springs. My personal favorite has to be getting pulled over doing a casual 40+ with no lights at all after midnight on a DD enforcement night. Was certainly glad I had stopped at the bar for a cold one 15 miles back so I could fit into their theme. Though they tried I was below the legal limit and doing 1 mph below the posted limit and ended up not handing me the ticket for the lights after following me home. I could tell they were impressed with my ability to hand roll a cigarette behind the bars.

I've never gone very fast on flat ground, but I once exceeded 50 mph on an MTB with a group heading down a (paved) mountain road. (On a long, straight run, of course!) I was glad to have those disc brakes.

I don't know what I was thinking, but it was quite a rush.

Plus 50 on Alum Rock Ave coming down. Had a huge group of folks who pretty much froze cross traffic for the entire length. I went for it. On my Tri bike without doing 40 miles before hand... I might break that, but I remember promising myself I'd never try that again... so damn fun though.

54 mph on St. Vrain Road in Boulder County. Not especially steep where I was at but a powerful chinook wind out of the Rockies pushed me into Longmont.

100km/h - then it was ok you did it - time to slow slow slow the f down. have not cracked 80 yet this year, but I am starting out this year 10ish lbs lighter (158) so it might take me a bit to get adjusted

cheers

I went 33mph up a 1% grade drafting a bus out of golden the other day. Fastest downhill 55. I had a car cut in front of me once at 52mph once, I quickly passed her on the left and expressed my displeasure.

Getting over 50 is pretty easy but 55+ takes just the right set of circumstances.

That's pretty fast, never heard of anyone going that fast on that descent.

That's a good speed for that road. I hope you know it's not the same one as St. Vrain Canyon...

55mph in Kansas. I'll leave it to you to decide if I'm a superhuman or if the flatness of Kansas has been exaggerated.
