How can I find out how much my bike is worth?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How can I find out how much my bike is worth?

Hi everyone, sorry if this is a repetitive topic or anything, but I couldn't find any information anywhere.

I have a 2004 Cannondale R900si with Ultegra/105 stuff, and a Selle Italia pro flite (I think). It's got about 110 miles on it, and one scratch on the pedal from a drop at a standstill. I think I paid around $1200 for it in 2004.

Is there any way to know how much I could sell it for? I can't find any of these for sale on the internet, and I don't know how much bikes depreciate. It's a nice bike, but way more than what I need, I feel, and I don't ride much outside of commuting any more.

Thanks for any help, everyone, I appreciate it.

Go on your local craigslist and look at bikes of similar vintage and with similar components then add a little bit since you have a nice frame then add a little more so people can try and bargain with you and see how many bites you get.

The value of a used anything is a function of what you are willing to take and what someone else is willing to pay. So I would say determine what you would take for it (or what you would actually pay for it if someone else were selling it) then add a couple of hundred. If someone buys it for the asking price good for you. Otherwise they can make a lower offer which you can then accept so they think that they negotiated a better price.

For a "quick and dirty" rough estimate, take what you paid and cut it in half - then add $100 or so for "negotiation room". If you get no takers, lower the asking price - or list it on E-Bay and set a reserve to the lowest you will accept.

And remember, a buyer with cash in hand now is worth more than a potential buyer who has not called and may not even exist and that may or may not make a better offer tomorrow.

No matter how nice your 04 is, it is a 6 year old bike. if you are not in a hurry to sell it then you can be more firm in your asking price. If you want it gone tomorrow - set a fire sale price and watch it fly.

Ask around the forums or post on craigslist and see what kind of offers you get? Also check other bikes that are similar to yours.
