Great Western Loop in San Diego.

kleinboogie 09-26-11 02:21 AM

Nice videos. I like the line about it being a nice day for the beach.

Here's a memorial ride video I finally put together. It's really hard compressing 3 hours of video into 4 minutes. Enjoy.

rangerdavid 09-26-11 05:59 AM

great job on the videos guys!!! I love this thread............

Carloswithac 10-03-11 08:40 PM

The camera is going back on the stem. Bar mounting it adds more shakiness for some reason. =(

I've slacked in this thread..here are the last 3 of mine that I posted in the 33

Redmond Derby Days Crit...Dual camera angle. Large field / good crowd...had the juice that day, crashed out 2.5 laps from finish..ended up running over a guy who "Superman'd" (He broke his wrist, elbow, concussion, plus superficial stuff). I thought I broke his leg when I ran over it...I did damage his S3 and 808s though...unavoidable part of the game.

Nice editing. Hate to be a buzzkill, but can I get some details? What category is this? Might be informative to keep total distance and grade% always showing. wow. thanks.

This is from our Temecula ride.

Nice videos. The climbing vids made me tired. Your grade value does what mine does which is go to some crazy high number. Mine does it on the high side on long flats. Here's sprint video I made the other day.

Mrs Amtrack, always fun seeing your videos and have meant to mention how your "workplace warnings for audio" have made me chuckle. I actually thought of your audio comment recently while huffing and puffing up a hill here in Montreal, made me smile when I realized how I was sounding....
cheers from el norte.

(again, I envy you folks with your riding areas and extended riding season, we've been riding down to 5c up here at times lately--having an indian summer respite now..but not for long)

+1. The real sounds add a lot to the ambiance. It's nice to hear someone else suffering rather than the roaring sound of my own breathing on a climb. Keep it up!

freight, thanks for the info on the grade readings and HR. Since Dashware uses a CSV file I'm thinking of smoothing it out before I create the dash file but that's just one more thing I have to do to create a video. Cheers

You should make a sufferfest video. ;) I love the sights and sounds of a good sufferfest.

sorry, apart from not doing as big climbs as you, the only camera available for that sort of thing is ye old family crappy old pt and shoot, no mount...and to be honest, I dont think Id have the patience to do the post-prod stuff on teh computer.
I would say that seeing the various climbing videos on here as inspired me to go do climbing rides, and I really do find that they are great for making one stronger, even with the 1-1 1/2 rides I do with what I can climb here; and even at the speed I do them.
The important thing is to feel and see an improvement over time for yourself, that makes it worth it.

Are there any alternatives to DashWare? I'd like to start doing some of the overlay stuff but don't want to spend the $50 and I don't have a windows machine. (And no I don't want to buy Parallels or VMWare.)

No, this is the same as "I want a ferrari but I don't want to buy the roads required to drive it on."
I don't really mind the $50 for dashware, there's just significant cost associated with getting to a baseline of even being able to install it. (Namely paying for Parallels or VMware, then paying for a Windows license. That $50 quickly turned into more than $100.)

Also, you're better, smarter, better looking, faster, richer than me, and always will be. Now that we've established your superiority, can I get a real answer?

i didnt want to say roads since I dont actually purchase them...I unwillingly pay for them via taxes

Grumpy McTrumpy 10-14-11 10:13 AM

I run windows apps using crossover.

Right now it's free in beta mode. I've never used it, but here's the author's YouTube channel. All the videos on his channel have the Bike Telemetry data overlay.

Thanks for reminding me about that software. I like the gear ratio guessing. I may try to put that in Dashware. Fun with math.

I like it. The curvature of the spokes was awesome. I know those roads well. We usually come back that way on the SDBC rides. Cheers

Makes me wistful. A lot of roads I recognize from my SoCal winter training camp trips (2004 through 2011). I'll miss the trip this coming Jan/Feb, kind of bummed. Beautiful training there and I have great friends that way too.

DashWare used to be $600, so $100 and change is still a drop in the bucket...Keep in mind that you are seeing small snippets. I've used the videos to help my racing / decision making...it becomes a lot less expensive looking when you look at it that way. A lot of things don't exactly happen how you remember them going down.

Thanks. I do when it makes sense. For instance, the reason there is no grade in the video you linked is because it would 0% the entire time. :) It was a flat course. Also this one you linked was a mid-late season cat 4 race, where many jumped to the 3s just after.

What part of San Diego is that second one in?

zitter 10-17-11 12:37 AM

going up the coast from campus through del mar, solana beach, encinitas and a bit farther not quite to carlsbad

carpediemracing 10-17-11 06:37 AM

Power plant towards end is Carlsbad, just south of Oceanside, just north of Palomar Airport Road. I'll miss riding there this winter :(

Heck I even miss that little sidewalk thing in the preview pane (Encinitas?). Just before there I usually debate "road or path" and choose path. If traffic is light, there are a lot of pedestrians, and I'm flying (i.e. tailwind), I'll choose the road. There's an extra stop sign by choosing road (path has no stop). There's also a short steep climb just before the road/path split, so "flying" is relative. If I'm going over 22-24 mph at my "debate point", i.e. as I crest the hill, I'll stay on the road as I know I'll be able to maintain close to 30 mph on that stretch.

And yes I stop at the stop sign on the road side of it.

When I ride solo I also make that decision. Sometimes there's a Sheriff at that stop sign. After I saw him give 3 cyclists tickets I just take the path.
