I wish I could say this was my last ride but it's not. It's very entertaining though.:thumb:

choochoo, yup that first vid, that descent has lots of "freefall for a few seconds before impact" dropoffs there didnt it? Pretty scary looking ones. On a descent like that I would certainly want to be personally sure of my front brake cable, as a mechanical could be scary. Ive been down some like that where you really do have to keep things in check and to not mess up lines and always keep a reserve of line/speed.
Really looks dry as heck out in there neck of the woods.

the 2nd vid descent...you were hauling ass there werent you? Looked like you were consistently up around 60-70k, 40-45mph for a while. Very fun to watch. Again, you certainly want to keep a good eye on your tire conditions and check for stuff stuck in before the descent.
I dont always think to do this, but I should. This summer I was on a descent that wasnt very steep but pulled in behind a van slightly to get going faster and was surprised by why I wasnt getting past 60k, then felt the front not feeling kosher and pulled over to find a piece of glass in the front tire that was causing it to go flat mercifully sort of slowly (not with a bang in any case) and boy was the tire hot from being underinflated.

Have you ever cornered with getting your knee out and down? It can really make a difference in helping the bike around an apex. If you havent tried it, give it a feel sometime and see how it puts your weight in towards the apex and in larger lean angle situations where you really are cornering, I find it makes me feel much more confident in how the bike and I get through a corner. If you havent tried it, do, as for someone who does descents a lot, its a good trick to know, even just for developing the instinct to do it if you overcook a corner or get your line slightly wrong, as I find it helps a lot manhandling a bike through an apex (but I guess basically it is helping to get your body weight down and "into" the apex. It certainly wont save you from a huge misjudgement of corner speed or line, but in my opinion its a good technique to be comfortable with and to do instinctively before you do get off line.
Theres a fantastic youtube vid of a tour de france guy catching back up to the peleton on a big descent, really nailing it through the corners. The specific vid uses a Mozart piece as the sound, sorry, cant recall riders name, but its fun as hell to watch, and to see his cornering technique.

found it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxXqQqAc2pA

doing this sort of thing is for me right up there with, well, other things in life, and the Mozart piece in this vid just matches perfectly the feeling of nailing apexes perfectly and hauling ass through them.

mmm mmmmm mmmmmmm

So did YT remove the 10-minute video length restriction? Or is there some trick to be able to upload videos longer than 10 minutes?

djb 10-23-12 09:11 PM

mt diablo, fast freddie rod. I have seen that before, not sure where but I have, tks for putting it up though (I did just watch the whole thing again)

this does touch on the topic of bravado and leaving a certain percentage of wiggle room for either errors in line, surface surprises or even stuff like some doorknob doing a u-turn around a blind corner or something. We always have to leave that percentage there to react, and to assess how far up the corner we can see to adjust our line and speed.
Many many years ago I had motorcycles (think I mentioned this already) and did a small amount of circuit racing, and because of that I was much less inclined to ride on the limit in corners on the street, as doing such things on a track is the best place to do that sort of thing(not to mention the safest place, even if you have an off as you arent hitting stuff like fences, trees etc) Same with bicycle riding and keeping things in check in terms of leaving a certain amount of room for avoidance manouvers of surface stuff and being very aware of line of sight and adjust corner speed accordingly.

again, all that stuff said, riding within oneself and the conditions, yet still fast on descents is right up there with nookie for me. Man its fun.

djb 10-24-12 11:04 PM

agreed. I have touched wood for all of us.
cheers and enjoy your Ca. riding, here it is getting chilly and Nov. means more and more chilly and more and more rainy.

PatrickGSR94 11-12-12 12:51 PM

You're a sucker for punishment, ain't ya? :p That overlook down to the water at the beginning is pretty impressive, though.

What gear do you usually run on those climbs? 36-26 or something lower?

djb 11-12-12 04:18 PM

a lot of roadies are a bunch of bragging you know whats anyway, with a lot of one upmanship going on, thats been my take on it, especially coming from a touring perspective.
as you say, who gives a hoot. Getting ones arse out there and enjoying riding is the most important thing, and how many teeth you have here or there certainly isnt something to judge someone by (unless of course theres only a few in your mouth, you play banjo, have a penchant for pigs, and I happen to meet you on a canoe trip...)

djb 11-12-12 06:33 PM

Re knees, ditto mcschmitto on that one, I certainly want to be still riding well in 20 years +

Cool vid, interested to see how you mounted the camera. One odd thing I noticed is that around 2:37 the speed indicator dropped all the way down to 6.x mph but it didn't look like you were slowing down at all. Any idea why?

I use this K-edge mount:
http://www.amazon.com/K-EDGE-Handleb.../ref=pd_cp_p_1

It's probably the best gopro mount available for handlebar mounting.

I use Dashware to make the overlays and, every now and then, Dashware has issues reading the .fit files natively. So, I sometimes have to use Garmin Connect to convert it into a .gpx file which appears to be somewhat slower to report abrupt speed changes than the .fit file. It's either an issue with the .gpx data interpolation or the satellite signal dropped out due to tree coverage.

I didn't have to convert the data file for the following race and you can see how much more responsive the gauge looks:

Hey Guys,

Some cool vids there!

Have started doing some bike videos using an ION Air Pro and overlaying with dashware. However I find a lot of the footage is un-watchable due to vibration, even on relatively smooth roads.

I have found the standard mount flexes considerably and I can see the camera vibrating continuously at speeds above 25Kmh. If I hold or put pressure on the camera while riding the video is much clearer, so I am thinking the mount is causing most of the problem.

Before spending $$ on a new mount I wanted to find out what camera and mount combination you guys are using and any other tips that might be useful. I notice the post above mentions the K-Edge mounts, however these do not have the tripod mount that is compatible with the ION :(

Perhaps we can start with the following questions and work from there.

What tyre pressure does everyone use? 120psi (thinking this is way to high!)
What camera and mount combination? ION Air Pro with supplied bike mount
What resolution? 1080/25 Frames or 720/60
Any post processing to reduce the vibration/shake? Power Director

An example of the problem can be seen here

Thanks,
Jim

1 700 X 25 slicks, 110-120 PSI; depends on my mood.
2 That ION has a similar form to my ContourGPS, I just use
strips of an old inner tube. It's free and because it's tight
and solid; no vibes due to mounting.
3 1080 for best quality.
4 Youtube and other commercial software just makes a
bumpy video wavy, I prefer the bouncy view :)

You did not mention what Garmin model you are using, however I found with the Garmin Edge 500 and Dashware it works best if you set the Garmin to record at 1 sec intervals and have Auto Pause set to off. Both of these settings can be changed under Bike Settings Data Rec. and Auto Pause respectively. For the last couple of videos I have used the .fit file and have not had any issues with the latest version of Dashware 1.3.6.

1nterceptor, Your mount seems to work pretty well looking at your vids :thumb:. DO you know how fast you were going in any of them?

jimbohamez 11-22-12 07:07 AM

Here is a video of a training ride with the ION on my helmet. Is still a little shaky but the result is much better.

I don't use a bike computer so I'm not sure of my speeds. In this video I was using 2 cameras. I regular Fujifilm pocket camera for
panning and different angles, and a ContourGPS on the forks. Around 1:25 you can see the footage w/ the ContourGPS strapped
on the forks with inner tube strips. I'm pretty sure I was going over 30 mph(48 kph).

My suggestion is whatever camera a rider is using - GoPro, Sony, regular digital cams, etc.; however it is mounted - handlebars, helmet, etc. add some strips of rubber band or inner tube to cinch/tighten the cam solid.

Based on what I have seen with mine a totally agree with you. Would be good if manufacturers of POV action cameras could supply some decent mounts for them!!

Cornering 101 - The exit road.

Watch closely as the lead rider comes in to hot on this corner and over shoots into a driveway where he comes to a safe stop!

My latest addition. Had a friend with a camera available who was willing to drive ahead of us and setup a few shots.

evan938 12-05-12 04:26 PM

so i skimmed through this a bit, so i apologize if i missed it...

does anyone have any video of road rides they've done, 45+ minutes long? im looking for something i can put on my TV and put the trainer right up to it and somewhat simulate an outside ride. i found a couple on youtube the other night, but the guy recording it had the camera mounted to his helmet, and with looking for cars and checking out the scenery, the constant moving of the image almost made me sick. lol.

Lol, I have about 100+ rides of 2hrs + footage each. In raw format. I don't know how that helps you though.
