Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

FWIW: I've had plenty of casual rides turn into mini races out of nowhere. Some initiated by me, some seen by me and some I just jumped right in as it was refreshing to have a good challenge on otherwise boring segments of rides.

I have two jobs and I'm a manager @ both - so my phone is always on and I always have to answer it. Sometimes it pisses me off in the middle of one of these mini races... other times, it's my excuse

Wasn't he also World Masters Road champion back in the early 90s ?? Or maybe he was 2nd to Bill Emerson ... They finished 1-2, but I can't remember the exact year or who was 1st.

Beanz seems to spend a lot of his time riding the same trail over and over, so I'm sure this kind of thing happens a lot. And he's big so probably an appealing draft target.

OK, I overlooked the MUP thing. I guess anything and everything is possible on the MUP.
I retract too.
But this does have a similar ring to the DuraAce600 post.

I've been doing much better in real races since I stopped competing on rides. If I am out with teammates and it's endurance pace, and someone goes away on a hill, I just let them go.

I figure I only have so much intensity available from my legs per week, and I tend to do 2-5 races per week these days (one is a TT). Hence, all the rest of my bike time is spent at endurance pace, or occasionally tempo on hills.

The other thing is mental. I get to remember how much fun riding a bike is when not consumed with suffering and intervals.

dunno. I was referring to the 20km TT. I don't think he won the RR that year.

I don't waste much time with friendly MUP races. At times I will do 5,000 ft of climbing or some climbing in the dirt, then the next day some dude on the trail revs his engine?

My weekend rides are all about pacing the wife on the MUP. Now watching dudes stress about not keeping up with the wife is fun!

Hmm, I tried to make it clear that I wasn't racing, didn't know Iwas racing and my 19 average doesn't compare to the 26 mph.

Oh well, I better try another "which wheel thread" next time since this one has been beat to death!

I prefer "informal races":

- No entry fee.
- No driving long distances to get to the race.
- Flexible times.
- Familiar route and riders = less likely to crash.

I don't care about "points to upgrade from cat Y to cat X". Some of you do. Good for you. It's not my thing.

I'm with Grumpy, I'm calling BS. If the OP is as good at racing as he is at telling stories, he should sign up for a race.
I think you're reading his post wrong. he's saying he's just riding along and other people think they're racing. He's not claiming to be fast, or strong enough to race. Just that other riders who are obviously not as strong as him are making excuses for why they can't keep up. I doubt he's posting this to make it seem like he's stronger that everyone, he's posting it for the humor in the excuses.

a lot of people on here are way to uptight.

That was a good story beanz. I enjoyed it. I don't think I go fast enough for someone to draft me so I rarely would encounter this sort of behaviour. You don't see many posers here though. Lots of racks and fenders..

I never do that on a MUP. In fact I've only used a MUP twice and both times on the same day (Biked and then ran). I hate them. Either people are too slow for it to be fun or they are too fast for it to be safe (impossible to be both). I don't even know why people use them for bikes at all.

Usually it happens that we are going at a decent pace and have dropped a portion of the main group so knowing there is a planned rest stop we decide to attack it and wait for the others. Might not be a pro thing to do, but it makes it a bit more fun. Get a wee better workout and we get a chance to talk about stuff we are never going to buy for awhile longer

Beanz, that's hilarious.

It completely baffles me that people want to 'race' on MUP's AND that there are people who are rude enough to get on a wheel without asking and/or introducing themselves...

Good on you!

I'm glad you enjoy doing what you're doing. However, the point still remains that you're not racing. What you need to learn is that what you're doing is totally okay. We 'elitist racers' have no qualms with you, but for some reason you (and others like you) always turn it into an us vs. them thing.

We don't care, and you shouldn't either. Just enjoy what you're doing and get on with your life!

I think that on a metaphysical level the definition of racing would include the Nature and Quality of the Ride.

If it was a ride in which you could crush the other's spirit, leave him dazed and confused, and hear the lamentation of his women, that would indeed qualify as a race. Or so it seems to me.

If crushing souls comes so readily, why not try your hand at a little cat 5 action? I would if I could ever get my bike rolling along faster than 14 MPH. Downhill.
