Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

haven't seen Swan yet this season. He is local for Hollenbeck's (this weekend) so we might get a sighting.

I am planning on doing Killington

This Santa Ana River Trail...on a good day, you could see as few as 2 or 3 riders in 10 miles. But there are some sections where walkers park that you need to slow down a bit for 1/8 mile or so. 30 miles one way, 60 roundtrip.

San Gabriel Trail..I've done a 72 miler round trip with seeing as a little as 20 riders and 3 homeless dudes.

Weekday rides without the wife:
Throwing this in cause somebody always says "you only ride flats you sissy"!

Hey Beanz,

I know that you are primarily "joshing" about these guys, but don't let them grind you down.

You are a great ambassador for the sport and a great example of how to enjoy cycling without letting your ego get in the way.

BTW, say, "Hi," to Rob for me. I haven't seen him posing at his favorite restaurant in Corona Del Mar in a while.

Once I get some of these goofy "real" races out of the way I'll have to take a ride on the SART so that I can wave to you and the lovely Gina.

Good story Beanz. I a similar racer type always want to go all out with me when I livedin South Bay and took the Dockweiler path. Only difference is he was on a full fairing recumbent. I couldn't touch him on the flats but killed him once there was a hill. I need to get back out with the So Cal group once in a while

Nice report. But you are no R600DurAce. Might I suggest a Watt-O-Meter with a dial? It will both add to the quality of your riveting ride reports and quantify your awesomness.

Of course he's not ... It's the opposite. R600DurAce was the guy "racing" in the story.

It's this kind of sharp, in depth, analysis that I come for here on BF.

Wow, doesn't matter how many of the others understand the post, or even how many of the others correct those that don't, there's always still one in the crowd!

Sometimes it helps if you bring some! Makes the thread more enjoyable for those that can understand it without having to sift through all the misguided unrelated comments.

I see it as a good story...The EL DIABLO or EL BONGO or whatever his hienesses name is cracks me up..and umd I'm surprised at you. Guess only your stories are worthy of posting because of your technological proof!

Actually UMD understood the humor in the story and had no problem with it! It's just sad that a poster can't post something while aiming for something a little more entertaining other than the topics posted 20 times a day without the narrow minded trying to ruin it! Sadly, if a post contains the word "race" it is automatically taken in one direction by too many. Really sad when another poster can't understand the post thent takes it to another forum looking to cause trouble for something they can't comprehend!

The BIG PAY OFF is when the posters that have the ability to comprehend the read post comments like "good story" or "funny story". Warms my heart to know that there are still some good people out there with a sense of humor and open minds, everyday people and riders. Even better when one of the hardcore racer types actaully leaves a good comment. Shows that not everyone's mind is stuck in a closet!

There is hope for the world!

Great story Mr. Beanz. As an added benefit, I now know why I suck at cyclocross racing. I just need to get different hubs!

No thin skin, just when the boyz go off hatin' in the wrong direction for no reason, makes every similar comment seem as if it's part of the mob. But you're right, I am awesome!

OP Thanks for a good story. I have learned many things in my short tenure with this forum, amongst which includes:
1) No matter how much it appears I am racing someone on a ride, there is good chance he is just training,
2) If I tell a story, make sure I consider that I will have an expert review it.
3) You cannot be hardcore enough, unless you too hardcore, then you might be a Fred (which btw appears to have a floating meaning that varies from thread to thread).

Yes, be sure to insert comments to clearly explain your intentions cause they will lhelp you later when the hatin starts. You can go back and say look, right her I said, "I had no idea I was racing" etc. ....

Your #1 reminds me of another similar story to the one I posted.

Wife and I on our usual 50 miler maybe few years ago. She on a 1984 Bianchi that I bought for $80. On the return trip we causually ride by a couple dudes. WE WERE NOT RACING AND UNAWARE (see what I did there?). My wife always rides my wheel so I control the pace, usually pushing her just enough to improve but never enough to drop her. Well, 5 miles later we roll into a park to refill the waterbottles. About 1 mintue later one of the dudes rolls up and says, "dam, I couldn't catch up with your wife". My wife..She's just riding my wheel and had no idea someone was "RACING" her.

So he says "well because she's on a Bianchi". I couldn't help but laugh, "dude, you're on an expensive Cinelli with a $1000 wheelset and we only paid $80 for this thing plus another $100 for the rear wheel". Then he said, "well I am 48 years old". Again I laughed and said, "she's 45". Then he said, "well I have a grandchild" so I said "we have 3".

He still didn't stop there, "well I was sick last year with the flu". So I got him with the "she donated a kidney last year". She showed the 10 inch scar on her side, that one pretty much got him, he finally gave up!.

Again, it's funny when you don't know it but others are concerned with racing againt you or your wife.

And for the record, I have no problem with friendly comp on the trial, but let me know so I can play too. If you win. I'll shake your hand and say, "you were better". Just don't challenge me the day after 5-10,000 ft of climbing, cause I'm just chillin'.
