Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What do you all think of this Orbea for me?

Sorry if this is taboo since there is minor overlap to my other thread, but its kinda dead in that thread, so I thought I'd get more specific here. Pretty sure my bike is too big (58cm), thinking about getting a smaller one. Here are my measurements/recommendations from competitive cyclist:

Measurements
-------------------------------------------
Inseam: 32.5
Trunk: 23.75
Forearm: 14
Arm: 26.5
Thigh: 24.5
Lower Leg: 22
Sternal Notch: 57.5
Total Body Height: 70

The Competitive Fit (cm)
-------------------------------------------
Seat tube range c-c: 53.5 - 54.0
Seat tube range c-t: 55.1 - 55.6
Top tube length: 54.1 - 54.5
Stem Length: 11.2 - 11.8
BB-Saddle Position: 70.6 - 72.6
Saddle-Handlebar: 52.9 - 53.5
Saddle Setback: 5.1 - 5.5

The Eddy Fit (cm)
-------------------------------------------
Seat tube range c-c: 54.7 - 55.2
Seat tube range c-t: 56.3 - 56.8
Top tube length: 54.1 - 54.5
Stem Length: 10.1 - 10.7
BB-Saddle Position: 69.8 - 71.8
Saddle-Handlebar: 53.7 - 54.3
Saddle Setback: 6.3 - 6.7

The French Fit (cm)
-------------------------------------------
Seat tube range c-c: 56.4 - 56.9
Seat tube range c-t: 58.0 - 58.5
Top tube length: 55.3 - 55.7
Stem Length: 10.3 - 10.9
BB-Saddle Position: 68.1 - 70.1
Saddle-Handlebar: 55.4 - 56.0
Saddle Setback: 5.8 - 6.2

Can somebody translate the quality of the Campy grupo to Shimano equivalents, i.e. Veloce is better than, worse than, 105, Ultegra, etc.

You've got legs on the short side for your height (same as mine at 66.5 inches in height). That 55cm might still be on the big side, but who knows when the seller fails to list the geometry of the frame. You could easily ride a 53cm LOOK. It would be a little tall for your legs, but better for the long toro. I ride an even smaller 51cm.

I would never buy a bike if the seller is too dumb to list the geometry and the exact stack height of the head tube, headset and spacers under the stem.

I've sold three bikes on E-bay and always list the complete geometry, plus the handlebar height range that can be produced with the setup I had (-6 degree stem) and the the fact that flipping the stem would raise the bars by about 2cm. I also warned not to bid if the handlebar height range was not suitable.

FWIW, Veloce shold be compared to 105. The bike is not worth even half what it cost new.

Makes your arms look spindly and your butt look big.

Seriously, ride it and if you like it, look to buy.

So what should I be offering for it if I like it? Trying to figure out if I can afford it. Any idea if Orbea sizes their frames center to center or center to top?

i'm around your height and i ride a 51 on Orbea. here is the sizing chart: https://www.orbea-usa.com/sandi_geo/2...etry_mitis.pdf
looks like a 04~06 Marmolada, and yeah, it is overpriced. unless those wheels are worth a lot.

i bought a brand new Mitis (06 frame, full Ultegra) for $1499 from an LBS a few months back, to give you an idea on pricing.

It's campy isn't it? That also means you may have a harder time getting spare parts. On the Orbea site I think they list clearout prices on older frames which you can order from a dealer.

+1 on mzd's comments, my dealer was offering some very nice deals on Alu Orbea's last year.

So I'm looking at the geometry from the link provided, and having a hard time matching up where I should be based on the fits that the calculator spit out. Any help there?

if you are new to road bikes, you would really benefit from heading to a local shop and trying out some bikes. that would give you the best idea. that is what i did. i know i could have saved a little either buying online or shopping used, but i wouldn't have known what to look for as far as geometry goes. for example, i ride a 51 Orbea, but a 54 in Trek sizing.
you will find deals at your LBS too - especially on closeouts on older frames. plus you get the new frame warranty.

That's too much money for that bike, especially when you have the option of picking up something from their closeout site brand new for around that price. I would recommend going to a shop and checking out bikes with different geometries to get a sense of what will work for you, especially if you have someone who knows what they're talking to about helping you.
