Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fastest MPH on flat road?

My top speed on flat land, low wind, increased today. Probably gained a little strength after that Century ride this past Saturday. I hit 35mph, then stayed at 32 mph for half a mile on a flat stretch.

I know a lot of people can probably dust that mph, so I'm curious what other people can max on flat road?

By myself? Or in a bunch sprint? Or behind a UPS truck?

If your speed increased it's most likely due to a tailwind rather than riding a century. Maintaining 32MPH takes over 600W which is good (depending on your weight) if you can hold it for a minute. 32MPH with a 5MPH tailwind (which is hardly noticeable) drops the power down to 473W.

I seldom have the opportunity to ride with no wind so any numbers I provide would be meaningless. I hit over 40MPH in a tailwind the other day.

On a good day with little or no wind I can just hit 50kmh. and hold it for just long enough for my speedo to register it.

Way too many variables with speed. I'd rather hear about sustainable power.

I hit 22 once. I did have valve stem covers though. Without them, I might have hit 26.
