I find that if I have a long ride, century or something, then take a rest day or two, I'll just feel GREAT and actually will do better.
As to flat-land speed, I never thought to check it like that. If the road is flat and I'm not trying to keep up with anyone, I'm trying to ride at a pace I can sustain, so getting all exhausted just to watch a little number go up hasn't been my thing.
That being said, I also find it very hard to find a flat straight place with no wind to test that.

I hit 32mph once...probably a good 3 tenths of a mile...then I had a heart attack, my lungs exploded and my legs gave out after blowing it that quick =)
I hit 36mph on my rollers once... just for the fun, and maybe stayed there for about 10 seconds.

About 110 mph in a 35 mph zone on a Suzuki 1200cc bike before I came to my senses and came off the throttle. I was a lot younger then.

My top speed on flat land, low wind, increased today. Probably gained a little strength after that Century ride this past Saturday. I hit 35mph, then stayed at 32 mph for half a mile on a flat stretch.
I know a lot of people can probably dust that mph, so I'm curious what other people can max on flat road?

Let's just say I'm a bit skeptical, particularly if we assume no tailwind and truely flat ground.
To get to the 35mph we're talking an effort of well over 1000 watts. Then to maintian it for half a mile, you need approximately 700 watts for a minute. That's going to put your one minute power in at least the Category 2 range.
There are certainly people on this forum that can do 700 watts for a minute. And probably a few that could do 700 watts for a minute immediately following a full sprint.
However, the odds that someone who appears to be pretty new to riding ( see First Century thread) could do it, are rather low.

...and he would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for that meddling Merlin and his silly facts.
