Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is my 3rd yr and I know I'm improving because this https://ridewithgps.com/trips/55276 would have been completely inconceivable at this time last year. I know it's not much to a lot of guys on here but for me it is a huge jump from last years climbing abilities.

Not much. But I will... provided I ride more. As an earlier poster stated: nowhere to go but up! At my level, it is most assuredly NOT about the bike.

This year so far: measly <600 miles, about like this: 60% endurance rides (tortoise-like, @ 11-12mph, generally in mild/moderate hills and Oklahoma winds), 20% intervals, 20% noodling. Not surprisingly, my only improvement has been an increase in endurance. I now feel pretty good the first 30 miles or so; that was not true in April.

My plan: long (tour) ride coming up, for which I am alarmingly undertrained. Assuming I survive that and do not (1) die, or (2) throw my bike off a bridge in frustration, after the tour I'll switch my focus to intervals & tempo work.

So, ask again later.

Now, HERE'S a sport where I could shine! Unfortunately, I enjoy the sport I'm bad at (cycling) more than I enjoy correcting people's grammar.

Unless it's an apostrophe error. I cannot abide apostrophe errors. That's my fingernails on a blackboard, like horrendous bike set-ups to the rest of you.

ok, so now we are all pleased with our improvements, when do you expect to peak this year?

I think I might be able to peak around August. I expect to be regularly doing 18 mph average round a certain 75 mile route.

I peaked about 15 years ago, 12 years before I got back on a bike.

Bikes: Have two wheels

Yeah, crested that peak years ago. I expect another peak, but it won't be as high as the last. Plus, the % grade out of this valley is pretty steep.

I got dropped 8 miles into the 40+ mile Road Nazi ride. Does that sound like improvement?

Maybe you should first get used to riding longer than 20 miles.

You wouldn't last that long on the Nyack Ride unless they were in Total Booger Flicking Mode.

And sometimes they are.

Booger Flicking Mode brings the ride speed down to 22-24 mph.

It's one long downhill. I try to remind myself this is a good thing to do on a bicycle.

I'm a total shill, but try strava.com .. you can view segments of your ride vs. the same segments ridden by other users. I kind of love it.

Not true. Keep riding long enough and see how that aging thing works.

Actually, you can't compare better than others, but yourself. So for that, I'm hoping to be better in 20 years than I would be if I didn't ride these next 20 years.
