Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is it really worth the extra $1000? I'm going to try both, but the people I spoke with at the shop said it's only worth spending the money if you're really concerned about stiffness.

Depends on your budget and riding. If a nice carbon 105 bike is a lot better than you're used to, the 5 will seem pretty sweet. The 3 get's you a lot better wheels and nicer components...but I believe it's the same frame.

Is it worth a grand more? Absolutely to some, but perhaps not to you. There's nothing wrong with the 5, it's a really nice bike.

That being said, if you're going to ride a lot and will keep the bike 4-5 years, I'd consider the upgrade.

I have a 09 Six Carbon 5 and have done multiple centuries and have had zero problems with fatigue, rides nice.

I will second this as well. Nothing really wrong with the 5 but a 3 would have been a little nicer I believe.

The Synapse Carbon 3 is about 1.5lbs lighter and has much much nicer wheels and brakes, better crank, and non generic cockpit components. The Ultegra 6700 hoods are more comfortable and the under bar tape cable routing is a plus. It's a good value upgrade if you can swing it.
