honestly just come do it and see for yourself, I've seen so much info in this thread that contradicts things I've seen. First of all, if your above 96t street, the middle of the day is great, there isn'tmuch traffic. The neighborhoods in northern manhattan are WAY more interesting because they are still neighborhoods. The eastside bike path sucks, it's bumpy and not continuous. The west side path is great, nice and smooth however weekends it's a zoo below 96th street.

Try to do your riding middle of the week if you want to ride the greenways, there will be tourists but not so many residents. Weekends you will get both. If you want to ride through the city streets, do it on a sunday, far less traffic in the city.

Just do it... wait, that's taken...

here is one thing for the B&T crowd, if you're riding through the streets what you want to watch for is people just randomly swinging their doors open to get out of their cars, they are probably so excited they got a parking spot that they forget to give a glimpse in the mirror to see us cyclist.

I ride the streets with both ear buds in, use your eyes and pay attention you'll be fine - and don't be afraid GO ALL OVER find streets that you'd never imagine you'd be going down in areas you never thought you'd check out.

Nothing beats NYC for city riding; the streets are wide and most are one-way. Traffic moves slowly and it's always a pleasant experience, nothing to be scared about!

Crossing the Brooklyn bridge is a must, and while you're there make sure to stop by RACycles to see all the nice toys

Riding up the East river is also a blast, but make sure to take a spin around Central Park. If you're in the village head over to John's Pizza on Bleeker for the best pizza in town, then to Caffe Roma (corner of Broome and Mulberry) for espresso and amaretto cookies (and lousy service ).

You can also take the bike path and head through Times Square...

I used to think John's was the best pizza in NYC until I moved into Brooklyn from Manhattan about 7 years ago and found L&B (what I consider #1), Grimaldi's, & Di Fara (a bit expensive now).

L&B is worth the trip for sure, especially for a square then some spumoni for dessert. The local crowd is great and the outdoor seating makes it even nicer. Grimaldi's is really good as well, by the way in NJ we have Brooklyn's Coal Oven Pizza which is awesome and since the owners are part of the Grimaldi family they are very similar in style and taste. Now DiFara was very savory but the wait is ridiculous, the owner needs to hire some help to keep the line moving. Watching him touch hot pizza pies with his bare hands is quaint and all but sitting around for 20 mins for a square isn't.

The bike lanes have gotten pretty great in the city actually. I'd check out the latest maps online and plan your route using them.
