Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

planet x ultralight brakes - installed! with pics and reviews

after reading a recent thread here and being pointed to the planet-x ultralight brakes, i figured i would order a set, given their super price of 149.

first off, i will say that i'm super impressed with the shipping, i had these brakes in hand today, about 2 days after i ordered them, thats impressive.

i installed them and went for a quick 30 mile ride, which is pretty hilly. these brakes are super for the price. at a claimed weight of 205g for the pair, they really work very well. they have a cool cam actuation system which really adds some nice linear, pretty powerfull braking power. for ultralight single pivot brakes, these suckers really stop the bike!!

fit and finish are excellent, exceeding my expectations by far for a 150 $$ set of brakes. they come pre-loaded with swiss stop pads, which is a great bonus and really makes them seem like a super value.

i've never used the more expensive ultralight brakes, but i cant imagine they would be any better than these. they dont stop quite as well as the chorus calipers i replaced them with, but pretty damned close, and the weight difference is definitely noticeable in hand.

overall, really a needless little upgrade, as the rest of the bike has fairly heavy parts on it, but i'm very happy with them, and i highly recommend.

I don't understand why you're using a chris king headset if you're after shaving off excess weight...

those brakes are not my cup of tea, but how do you like those swiss stop pads?
better than DA or koolstop salmon pads?

I've eyed those before, certainly a very attractive price.

Mind if I ask what your weight is? Many hills where you live?

this build is definitely NOT built with shaving weight in mind, as a matter of fact it has a carbon fork with steel steerer tube...

the swiss stop pads seem excellent so far. i've used both DA and koolstop, but on such different brake set-ups, it would be hard to quantify the difference in them.

Bikes: Too darn many.. latest count is 11

Cutting the excess brake cable will prolly shave 10 more grams

Look nice though. Have a set of their wheels, their customer service is top notch

these are going to be my next upgrade. Anyone a little heavier (I'm 200) try them?

I'm around 215 and have them. No issues at all. They stop the bike. Can't really ask more than that.

I'm 150, but found they were a little off the performance of my Record 11 Brakes, which isn't saying much because my campy brakes have much less power than my old 7800's. They are fine though 99% of the time and are great for recreational use, but that said I would never race with them. However they were better than the KCNC CB1's and Zero gravity's I've tried, and a much better value too.

Brakes look good, but what about the pedals? What are those?

Ritchey WCS. I like them. They use a 9 degree Delta cleat. Have been perfect since I got them. Prior to these, I used the Ritchey Peloton Pro. Also a good pedal IMO.
