Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Botto just had to bring out the pinnacle of Gran Fondo.

Well I could be in then, although where is everyone going to park?

Edit from below: great - and exactly parking a few miles away is no problem with the bike. I'll be coming in from 3 hours away but seems worth it.

So as for any comments on past centuries - the only one I hated had mandatory stops and check-in seemingly all the time, and totally broke the ride rhythm. I don't know if food will be offered on this like a century, but dry PBJ is no good.

Yes, the Alps are one face of GF (although Stelvio is not part of any GF, they have just Stelvio Day and the Austrians 'Dreilaendergiro').
The other is Emilia Romagna and Tuskany as the main hubs, e.g.

https://ilpassista.blogspot.com/2010/...s-version.html

Which ones have you done? GF Pantani over Mortirolo? The others look like GF Dolomiti (and two Stelvio pics).

@teterider: The city has lots of parking roadside in the area. Having a bike makes parking a mile away a no brainer. Hope you can make it!

On the GWB? That'll never happen.

How bout this?: close 2 of the lanes on the upper level and leave the walkways for the runners.

That's the plan. Not sure why people keep thinking we would want to squeeze 6,000 cyclists through the walkway. Savage!

how is the dreiländer-giro not a gran fondo, but an organized ride with a timing chip in NY a gran fondo?

Mandatory stops sounds absurd. What century was that?

I beg to differ. Having lived in northern Manhattan most of my life I should mention that parking in that area is scarce and if a lot of people are coming by car they're going to have a hard time finding street parking. I would recommend listing the public garages so people know where to park.

@botto: those pics while beautiful, made my legs hurt.

@botto: have you done Dreilaendergiro? What other GF have you done? You seem to speak of experience. Apart from moving the alps to just outside NYC, what else would you like to see?

@roadiejorge: yes, we will do that, thanks!

It would be a good idea to reach out to the local garages as well to see what their capacity is since a lot of them have a lot of residents who have monthly parking contracts. The MPG garage on 177th between Broadway and Wadsworth is probably the largest, then there's Central Parking on Broadway between 176th and 177th and Broadway. Those garages often deal with large crowds for events at the United Palace so are probably the best bets since they're right by the bridge; take a look at the garages further north too. Don't mean to be bossy, but I'm always in logistics mode at work so it's become a bad habit.

Best bet when coming into the city is Mass Transportation. It can be a nightmare finding street parking.

Parking garages can be an option, but you need to have 2 or 3 options prepared and most people aren't that organized.

Troublesome with that many bikes. I know the LIRR has restrictions on the number of bikes on trains and the groups that do centuries out to Montauk have a tough time with that. That said, 40,000 people find a way to get their bikes down to the battery for the 5 boro, so it's not impossible.

What about providing parking in NJ and having people take the NY waterway ferry across? The ride could start from the vicinity of their terminal on the West Side you would ride up the river and past the intrepid to start the ride.

We won't have mandatory stops. Chip will record the completion of the ride.
There will be plenty food and drink "Ristori" along the way for everyone else.

My $0.02.

There are several garages on Riverside Blvd, 64th street, in particular, that have 12 hour parking for $7.

Good luck. I hope this Gran Fondo happens!

in that case, won't be a bad place to end one, given that little Italy has the worst Italian food in the city. oh the irony...
