We have a lot of interest from Italy for our GF. Should I just ask everyone who's coming from there to bring food? I can already see a few Alitalia flights where everyone is trying to squeeze a Pizza past immigration.

Also a thought, a list of bike friendly hotels would be good, some people (myself) might be interested in coming up from out of town.

Later for the pizza, have them bring in some REAL Italian dishes.

lol, no need. just get some from Frank Pepé's from new haven. i hear that in order to themselves classified as a Pizzaeria Napoletana, they actually had to get certified by some official from Napoli. Besides, no offense to your great country (or more accurately, anything except Campania), I wouldn't trust most food coming out of Napoli given the garbage pile up issues, etc.

Well, I'm not Italian, so it's tough to offend me (it's tough generally, I'm a happy person) but have you been to Napoli or are you trusting what you see on the news? I mean, look at the garbage here in the city. Don't we love the smell in summer?

I went to the website.
Questions:
1) Cost?
2) Are you planning just going straight 9W to Bear? If so, how will you get cooperation from the Police/towns?
3) How many riders do you expect?

you got me on this one. well read but poorly traveled. i just remember some times back that the EU got skittish on dairy product from Campania because of possibility of dioxin contamination.

As far as route suggestions it would be cool if you could use the Palisades Parkway instead of 9W

That's a good question.
GFNY is more than just a century ride with a couple of hundred cyclists. First, 7,000 cyclists starting and finishing in Manhattan require various road closures and/or moderated traffic. The total cost for this will be roughly $400,000 which eats up most of the entry fee. Riders will get escorted from the start through the city, over the closed to traffic GWB and enjoy moderated traffic for the whole course. This service is not free as police will have to work extra for us.
On top of closed roads or moderated traffic you receive a cycling jersey that would cost retail upwards of $120, four timed climbs with various high value prizes in numerous categories (e.g. high end road bikes for the OA winners), great aid-stations, post race pasta party and a goodie bag that actually contains some very nice goodies.
Hence, if all you want is to ride to Bear Mountain, you don't need a Gran Fondo. Just hop on your bike and ride. Pay $10 for a coffee and muffin in Nyack and another $5 for a drink on the way home. That's what I do on many weekends with my wife and we have a great time.
However, if you want to ride in an event with 7,000 cyclists from all over the world, enjoy the competition at the timed climbs, like great prizes and fancy a well designed Gran Fondo New York cycling jersey in Euro cut with a long zip, Gran Fondo New York might well be a great day out for you.
Thanks!
Uli

Hmmmm, well put.
Its kid of like why go to a pub with friends and pay $5 for a Boddingtons, when you can buy a 6 pack of it equaling $1.25 a beer. Obviously for the venue, people, and activity of it.

Sorry I'm a bit late to this one. I did the Vancouver-Whistler GF this year. Overall it was great but there were a few things they could have done better:
- timing company screwed up, lots of riders had missing splits or zero finishing times. One of the things people are paying for is the chip timing, splits etc - make sure it works perfectly.
- all the free pizza and wine was at the halfway point; it should have been at the finish.
- have a proper staggered start with say six waves of 1000 riders each at 5-10 minute intervals. Otherwise the early km's are a real mess of different paces and abilities.
- some people will ride with tribars or earphones regardless of the rules: pull them out wherever possible.
Best of luck organizing this.
