Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

^^^^This. Shorts work just fine provided the waistband hasn't lost its stretch. But bibs are also very nice. I wear them for longer rides unless it's really hot and I don't want the straps and extra layer of fabric up to my ribs.

Bikes: scott CR1 rase rig, special__ed langster commuter masheen

water bottle cages aren't necessary, clip-less pedals aren't necessary, bar tape isn't necessary... but theres a reason most road bikers use them

I prefer shorts but my crack complains about all the sunlight getting in so I go bibs.

When I was built like a twig I still preferred bibs. Just better, period.

Not built like a twig anymore, more like a small stick.

Same as what others here said. Always use bibs except when on trainers.

Do people still talk like that? Ask what your wife thinks, she might have a different opinion.

Bikes: I just ride them, they own me.

Are bibs necessary? No.
Are bibs better/more comfortable? Probably.

Honestly, ride what you want, and find most comfortable. Keep in mind that not all bibs are the same (just like not all shorts are the same).

For me, I haven't worn a pair of shorts since the early 90s or so...It's all bibs, and until something better is invented, it will always be bibs.

For those who haven't tried them and are knocking them: wow, what an informed opinion you have?!

from my perspective, bibs (the right ones) are more supportive for the male anatomy. They hold things tighter, and for me that is necessary.

I can see how bibs, whilst extremely hot on girls, are probably a nusiance.

The whole toilet thing must be a pain, and also guys probably don't care so much if they can see your butt crack.

Shorts ftw.
Have no need to pay the extra cash for lycra suspenders.

Bibs. Less pressure around the waist is a good thing when you're bent over all day. Doubly good if your stomach isn't doing a very good job of tolerating the food/drink you just had.

I have shorts and bibs and often bounce back and forth pending on mileage and heat.
