9-5'ers, when do you ride?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

6am? Does such a time even exist?

The only thing harder than waking up early is going to sleep early.

I'm an 8 to 5 worker ... do people still start work as late as 9 am?? I think Dolly needs to change her song to "Working 8 to 5"

But in answer to the question ... I ride in the evening. These days it is on my trainer because it is dark and cold out there after 5.

Yup, this is the key. I 'taught' myself to be a morning person a long time ago (when I had to be at work at 6am), and the secret is simple and easy, but it's not always fun - just get your ass out of bed when the alarm rings. No snooze button. No mercy.

Hard to do. I usually go after work. I need to be up and out the door by 5am in order to get to work by 7, which allows me to blow out around 3:30 or 4, home by 5 or 6, out the door riding 6:30 until about 8 or so. It's not ideal but it works... Kinda.

Winter sucks. Pretty much no way to do it except the trainer. These are the best days of the year.

Just completed an hour on the trainer this evening. It's a cold night tonight so I figured that was my best bet. I actually don't mind riding the trainer in the evenings in winter, as long as I can get outside on weekends.

Whenever I can.

Maybe it's because I've been working my usual schedule (7:00 am to 4:00 pm) for 15+ years, but it's really never work that gets in the way of a ride. My work schedule is a known element that I'm used to planning around. It's all of the other committments and activities that come up that usually derail my ride time.

But to answer the question, with my work schedule, I can generally get in a 2+ hour ride on weeknights and I have the weekends, all (as noted above) depending on what else is going on any particular week.

it's not so hard to get up early if you get set up the night before.

bike by the door, preferably pointing at the door
fill tires, lay out clothes
water bottle open next to the Brita
place coffee cup in coffee maker, place new tassimo cup thing in the maker.
place ipad in bathroom.

then the next morning:

stumble out of bed, hit MAKE COFFEE button
put in contact lenses
retrieve coffee, bring to bathroom
bathroom + ipad + coffee
ready to ride.

My theory on morning people/anti-morning people is that they just haven't done it. The body clock is completely adjustable.

That said, if mornings are out for you, then how about a lunch ride? Or commute both ways, and tack miles on the morning or evening ride as needed?

If you get to a point that cycling a certain amount of miles/hours is important to you, you can find the motivation to get up early. IMO, morning riding is better for so many reasons. Where I live it's the only time you don't have to ride through ridiculous amounts of traffic and on the MUP it's the only time you don't have to worry about a million little kids and rollerbladers.

I actually get up earlier on the weekends than weekdays so that I can enjoy my rides free from stress.

I've been looking at riding at 6am, but it's hard to wake up that early.
I go out every morning between 6 and 6:30 am....... but I live on the gulf coast and it is just too hot to wait until later in the day.... also, there is less of a head wind early in the day

Struggling with a schedule now that I have a little baby, but before I would just get home from work, walk the dogs, then head out on a ride. Couldn't get much of a long ride in on a weekday, but 30 miles or so which isn't bad with a busy work schedule.

I work from home. During school I ride at lunch.
During summer vacation I do not ride when my son is at my house. I run instead. However, I am thinking of breaking out the trainer. ugh
On weeks he is at his mother's house I ride whenever I want. Generally after work.

I usually ride on the weekends or after work. But recently I have moved to an evening shift which is going to totally change my riding scheduel so I can ride in the mornings more often I'm actually really excited about it. Time to put in more miles and get some very much needed hill work.

Up at 5am, out the door by 5:30 for an hour or a little more. Pack up the kids and get them on the trailer, 20 minutes of riding to and from the daycare. Changed at lunch for another hour, puck up lunch and eat at my desk. 20 minutes picking up the kids and riding home.

Maybe on a good day I have the energy to go out at 7pm after the little one is in bed for another ride, usually I don't unless I didn't have the opportunity to ride the rest of the day.

I've been trying to schedule vacation days to go out and ride all day, but so far I'm 1 for 3 as the kids manage to come down with a fever more often than not.

During the school year I have to get my daughter to school by 6:30a so I just head to work and get out at 4:00p and ride then. Better in S Fl in the winter anyway, warmer and I don't need lights. During the summer I am up at 6:00a and on the bike at 6:30a so also good as it is cooler in the morning and usually raining in the afternoon.

I usually get out shortly after I get up at 5AM. I try to get an hour or so in. I ever used to ride early but it does make a great start to the day.

Cheers,

I have also been known to join friends for dinner out by biking there and back. Easy way to get up to a few hours in, all I have to do is make sure I have a change and some baby wipes for when I get there.

some guys I work with ride early in the morning before driving to work. I like to bike commute year-round, but not everyday. however, weekend joyrides are my all-time favorite. recently though I've been enjoying night rides cuz the roads are empty around dinner time and I can get a quick 30 miles in without interfering with any other daily routines

I usually run at lunchtime and ride on the weekends. This year I bought a light so that I could ride after work, but I haven't had to use it since it arrived after the daylight savings switch. So now I ride ten miles after work one or two times a per week and it's been great. It really helps me relax.

The weather has been really cold this summer, but I"m looking forward to it warming up so that I can actually do a night ride when it's warm. I'll be kind of scary and exciting. I intend to be real cautious.
