Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: Cannondale Synapse '06, Mongoose titanium road bike '00--my commuter. Yes, Mongoose once made a decent ti road bike.

Add Bob Costas as an irritating commentator.

Those guys are awesome - I am sure you could sell MP3's of Phil making generic comments for recreational riders doing everyday rides.

As for lame - there is nothing much worse than any US hockey commentator.

As for good - the NBC winter olympic coverage - in particular the opening ceremony Canada montage was terrific.

I am looking forward to Phil and the Tour.

"France is pretty" may be my favorite part. This never gets old.

For the most part, very true. I do miss Fred Cusick and Derek Sanderson calling Bruins games, though. Fred got so old, he couldn't remember his own name, nevermind the names of the players on the ice.

Pretty sure he grew up in Wales.

Schlanger and Gugulski on USports are ok, but they don't know who *anybody* is. "Here comes a Liquigas rider" "There goes a Euskatel rider". Study the sport, guys.

So this year will be interesting for me. It's the first time I'm paying for the satellite link to my dish which means no Phil, no Paul, just the sound of the motor bikes and crowd. I guess all these years I could have just turned the sound down but then I'd miss such "classics" (????) as "there is no other rider like him...the way he dances on the pedals then settles into the saddle" I'm convinced Phil has described every mountain rider in every tour with this, since Pantani.

IMHO, the worst announcer in sports: Chico Resch (NJ Devils). Moron.

i think the reason that they don't know the riders is the same reason we don't, they are commenting off the tv feed and can't see the riders face until they get closer to the front/camera

While I do enjoy listening to Phil and Paul call a race, to call them the most dynamic broadcasting team in sports is a bit much. I would MUCH rather listen to Mike Emrick and John Davidson (or anyone else with him for that matter) call an NHL game. If you want to listen to a guy with passion for his chosen sport, give Doc Emrick a listen. Noone does it better.

Cheers,

Brian J.

I'll take hockey commentators over any other sport. Vin Scully calls a good ballgame, and I love hearing Gary Thorne call an NHL game. I watched the Prologue and Stage 1 today, and I really don't mind the TdF commentary.
