Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First!

I was wondering what i should get first. I am new to road cycling and i just recently ordered my bike and i am waiting for it to come in. My budget will be about 100 dollars of spending money a week on new supplies to get into this sport. I will need to get pedals so that is the first thing.
I don't know if i should get pants and shirts first or i don't know. Anything would be helpful.

I already have a pump
and yeah thats about it

Also if you could recommend a certain item.
Thanks!!!!!

A patch kit so you can fix flats. Possibly a small pump, spare tube, and tire levers so you can fix flats while biking. Water bottles and water bottle cages.

Helmet is first, yes.

What kind of pedals? If they're clipless, then you'll need shoes.

Cycling shorts, or even better, bibs & a jersey and a couple of water bottles with cages will make your cycling much more enjoyable.

Safety first.

Get some condoms in case you want to have sex on the bike.

They're biking shorts with straps that go up to your shoulders.

https://www.google.com/search?q=bib+b...ient=firefox-a

Much more comfortable than normal bike shorts, which have an elastic waist band. There's a recent thread about why bibs are better than shorts.

I bought a pack of those stretchy muscle shirts without the sleeves(round neck) and they are freaking awesome for cycling.

They are super cheap and sold at wal-mart so you better spend that money on helmet and cycling shorts for the time being.

Don't over think it. Get some good (that does not mean expensive) cycling clothing and get out and put some miles on!

Good idea on the pedals.

So here's your check list:

Pedals
Helmet
Bibs
Jersey
Sunglasses
Shoes (not necessary at first, but you'll probably want to get some at some point)
Bottle cages (if you don't already have some)
Water bottles
Seat pack (containing: patches; multi tool; tire levers; Co2 (or get a mini pump))

These are a good value. $35 & SPD on one side, platform on the opposite:

I'm not aiming to start a debate here (there's plenty of opportunity for that in the A&S forum) but personally I don't wear a helmet, it isn't essential, cycling isn't dangerous. So it would not be on my list if you have a limited budget.

You probably need some shades: they seem an indulgence only until a beetle flies into your eye during a 40mph downhill. And you do need waterbottle, a multitool and probably tyre levers if you haven't mastered the trick of changing tyres without them.

If you buy a decent jersey you can probably do without the seatpack, the pockets will do. Shorts/bibs yes.

The other day I looked down and added up what I had on. From shoes up to helmet it was $530, and much of the stuff was bought on big sales. Of course it can be done for much much less. In fact I know that the first $100 could get you a decent helmet, fine road pedals, and some nice road shoes like Diadora. (pssst - check Nashbar).

The next $100 will get you gloves, short, jersey.
Then so on fro the lists above.

I really hope when you say "ordered my bike" that you mean the shop ordered the right size. Based on this post, if you just ordered a bike from the internet I think we are going to be seeing a lot of questions from you this summer. So just to head off some of those posts: www.parktool.com.
They have lots of how to, what is, how does that.
