Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

numb hands

I recently purchased a Globe Vienna 3 that I got at a really great closeout price on. I picked it up this last Sunday so I have only ridden it twice. Each time at around 4-5 miles I get some really bad numbness in my hands. I had the bike set up and fitted at my LBS. Is there anything I can do for this? I'm afraid maybe I chose the wrong bike and if so I have 7 days to return it or trade for something else. In reality they said if trading the 7 days is not an issue as they just want me to make sure I end up with the right bike. I am using it on asphalt and paved bike paths. I was looking for a bike to use for fun and exercise as an alternative to spin class. Here is a link to the bike My other options were the Sirrus and the Allez triple. I chose this bike mostly due to the price which was 38% off the msrp and the fact that I thought it would fit my needs.

That bike is pretty upright... do you feel like you're putting a lot of pressure on your hands? It doesn't *look* like you would.

Did you ask the LBS about your numb hands? They could probably check your fit for you.

^ you shouldn't need gloves to keep your hands from going numb after only 4-5 miles, or at all realy. especially on an up-right bike

i sure hope your LBS wouldn't try to sell you a bike that was the wrong size for you. are you sure you just aren't holding your handlebars with a death grip?

No gloves. I don't feel like I am putting too much pressure on my hands. I don't feel like I am leaning or resting on the handlebar when I ride. I am going to try another ride tomorrow morning and pay close attention to the pressure on my hands. If I still get numb I will head over to LBS and talk to them.

also i'd suggest you get a road bike... just because they're usually much more fun than commuter bikes (to me)

If your bike has the Specialized BG grips, try adjusting them.
I have mine tilted slightly up, but on my other bike, I had them set flat.
It may take a bit to find your 'sweet' spot.

From: Columbus, Oh!

Bikes: Soma Saga, 1991 Sirrus, Specialized Secteur Elite, Miele Umbria Elite.

I've a Vienna 1 Deluxe, and have that happen now and then. I just move them around, finding little variations seem to help. Also my ergo grips twist some and I found that angling them help. Consider some mountain bike bar ends. https://www.jensonusa.com/store/sub/1094-Bar+Ends.aspx

Good quality gloves help too.

FWIW I had the same issues when I rode motorcycles and solved it just by moving my paws around.
