Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Zipp 101's or 404's?

The 101's are soooo much cheaper and they weigh the same as if not a little less than the 404's.
Besides- I bet it's a lot easier do deal with a broken spoke on the 101's.

Is there a question in there?

With the 101's you pay the weight penalty of the 404's, but you don't get the alleged aero benefit. 101's are pretty heavy for what you get -- a good 200+g heavier than HED's Ardennes.

You're comparing wheels that cost about $1300 to wheels that cost about $2700. Also the 101 is only 30mm deep and aluminum while the 404 is 58mm and carbon. It's also probably got a lot more technology behind its build.

i wouldnt want the 101's for serious climbing events there are cheaper wheels that are much lighter. i would think of the 101's as just a really really expensive training wheel. sorry im not a 101 fan. you could get an aero wheelset for about the same, or a nice climbing wheelset, or a powertap, or a bunch of other things.

There's cheaper AND lighter for sure but the OP was asking about Zipps. I've heard some pretty great things about Dura-Ace wheels lately.

i think hes only asking about zipps because he believes that the 101's are just as aero as the 404's, not because he really want zipps. he probably thinks that zipps are the best (they are great wheels but they are also the most expensive). i was just telling him that he could go with 100 better options than the 101's, but not too many better than the 404's, but alot that are just as good if not only a little worse.

I actually bought a set of 404 Clinchers only to decide a week later that I really wanted 404 tubulars. That was an expensive mistake.

The weight difference and the fact that I bought them to race, not to just ride. Also the way tubulars rode compared to the clinchers came into play. If I wanted a wheelset for daily riding I would go with clincher. Since I was using them for racing I figured that if I flatted the race was over for me regardless so I might as well have the best wheel for the job.
