Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is the old bike the Mercier TT Aero? If so, how did you like it?

Cervelo is far out of my budget, but I'll live vicariously through yours

It's a Mercier Elle. I love it. It's been a fantastic bike. It feels like a big heap now, but its been a very good bike for me. Never had a single problem.

Awesome ride. The SLC-SL (now S3) has been my favorite for a few years. Next winter I turn 40 and I'm getting a mid-life present. It will definitely say Cervelo on it!

Have fun and let us know (after you get a few proper rides on it) how it compares to your current ride.

So back to the bike. What size is the Mercier and why are you happy with the size you chose on the new hot rod?

Congratulations!!! And your garage shot is impeccable. How long did it take you to get every thing right?

I love my RS. I would have liked to have gotten the Soloist Carbon (2008), but I go so slow it would have been embarrassing.

Fantastic bike ... having one myself. They look pretty sharp to. Seriously fast descending or ascending. Me headed up the Kitchen at the 48s mark on the S2 this past weekend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI2iQjQJ9_s You'll love it!

The Mercier is a 50' I'm glad I got the 48. The 51 wasn't good.

I just went for a quick ride. It got dark faster than I expected

The bike is awesome. It moves so fluidly. Even head on in to the wind, it just goes.

The only problem I have is that I can't put my feet down when I stop. Can I just drop my seat a tad? Or should I take it back in to have it re-fit?

And thanks for all the kind words everyone :-D

I love how skinney the S2 looks from the back. Good looking bike.

Are you trying to put a foot down while on the saddle? You normally slide up and straddle the top tube at a stop.

Congrats ijen...nice looking machine. In the pic of the new/old, it looks like the S2 has a much greater saddle to bar drop. You might find a few new aches and pains in the first weeks but you'll probably work it out. Have fun!

Yes, like if I stop at a traffic light. I almost toppled a few times.

I have an RS. In the 60s I rode Atala/Record. Now, nearing 60, I need something that makes me feel comfy. Somthing that won't trick me when I've ridden 60 mi and am really tired. I am not interested in going down, it takes too long to heal at my age.

ijen0311 got a nice bike. I wouldn't have gone with Ultegra, to me matching a top-level 2007 frame with a gruppo that was designed to be second-class wouldn't be my choice. I would have gone with 11 speed SR or Record, or SRAM Red or Force, or DA.

Actually, a factory-built bike isn't happening for me. But I bought a lot of bikes that were. When I got older, I ended up customizing them. That is a total hoot.

You aren't supposed to be able to put your feet down while you are on the saddle. Just unclip and straddle the top tube like heckler mentioned. If you can put your feet down while on the saddle the bike isn't set up right for you.

so you do or do not slide forward? can you flat foot while over the top tube? Most people don't stay in the seat and put a foot down (unless I am lazy and there is a curb). You shouldn't be able to reach a foot down from your seat (unless you were very weird proportionally)

I can flat foot over the top tube. On my other bike, I could tilt it a bit and have one foot on the floor. I'm not very good at hopping from the top tube to the saddle very quickly. I guess I'll just have to practice that. I'll try to take a quick photo.

Yep, get to practicing. It's more important to have the bike fit correctly than to be able to put a foot on the ground while in the saddle. I don't know anyone that is fit properly that can put a foot on the ground while in the saddle.

Now, as far as getting used to sliding up on the saddle, it's pretty easy. When you stop just unclip one foot, once it's time to take off again pedal with the foot still clipped in, set on the saddle, clip in the other foot. After a while you won't even think about it.

No, we already decided to do the Arundel sideloaders, remember? Black with red labels, on sale at CC.

It was the Co2/mini-pump decision you hadn't made yet, but I'm sure you wanted the GI AirChuck SL and either the Topeak Mcro rocket CB or one of the smaller Lezynes.

Did you have any other questions we already have answers for?

Oh, and nice bike.

Yeah, you're probably properly fit. At least, I know I am and I know I get off the saddle to put a foot down.

Nice bike. I can't come close to touching earth with my toes while in the saddle. Stick with the fit / saddle height. Ride easy if there were big changes. It will take a week or two to adapt to a new fit. Looks like saddle height was way low on the other bike....

The "other thread" was funny / creepy and all but this is so much better to actually see the bike and know you are happy with it.
