Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Have you ever?

Okay so the family is going to go walk on a path that also has a bike path. I am thinking of biking my way up to it. I think I can go the distance, but there is a fairly substantial hill in between me and my goal.

I am still just getting started but thought if I couldn't get up the hill then I could walk it I guess. Anyone done that before? I am not in shape but coming down the said hill will be a thrill and a half I am sure.

I was thinking I could have the fam drive behind a ways and if I crap out on the hill that they could rescue me after I walk the beast.

I was just curious if anyone else has ever done that. I won't give the grade of the hill (or maybe I should to give some of you uber riders a good chuckle ) but it is steep (to me) and a decent length as well. It is around a 6.5% grade by ridewithgps' guestimate.

Just wondering if this even a possibility or if I should just truck the bike and ride on the easy path. Oh and the road I would be on is fairly busy with car traffic.

Thanks a ton!

Pat

It sounds like one of the many bike paths in Colorado. Vail, Keystone, or Glenwood Springs. I'd stay far clear of those roads.

Yeah the hill is the main scary thing right now. I only have a few intersections between home and destination but yeah it kinda worries me a bit too.

Do a search for The secret to hills. Print it out and memorize the ones you think will be useful. Good luck

People (not me) do walk hills. Generally not an big problem unless you're talking miles or it's a busy road with no room on the side.

Has walking up a hill been done before? Yes, of course. Many times by many different cyclists.

I've long ago lost count of the number of times I've walked up hills.

Just be careful walking on a busy road ... walk well over on the side, completely off the road if possible.

challenge yourself. you'll have varying opinions, but trying your hardest to get up a hill, and having to walk the rest is better in my book than not trying at all.

+1

That's how I do it ... I work at getting as far up the hill as I can on the bicycle, and when it just gets too much for me, I get off and walk.

You never know until you try.

And if at first you don't succeed, repeat until you do.

If you attempt it, will you have enough in the tank to meet and do something with the family?
Never let them see you sweat.
