Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A new rider withan opinion and pedal questions

Hello All,
Recently I purchased a Wellington 2.0 from bikesdirect.com and I must say for a beginner and someone who doesnt really have the time, money, or knowledge to research and network and purchase either a higher end bike, or better bang for buck used bike, this was a great purchase. I have put at least 120 miles on it in about 2 weeks or so, and considering i work about 50hrs a week and will be going to college in a bit Im happy with my investment. And i feel it is a great entry to the road cycling world.

Now for the good stuff. I want new pedals. I havent researched much but basically what i want to know is what are some entry level pedals. I cannot afford $70 pedals and $70 shoes. That is just not gonna happen. So pedal wise, what are my options, and with those pedals, what shoes could I get?

All respectable input is appreciated

buy the best pair of shoes you can afford.

for pedals, check your local craigslist or ebay for used pedals. generally speaking almost all road pedals are pretty good, and buying a used set will likely get you something decent at a pretty good price.

For decent, on the cheap pedals and shoes, I guess I'd suggest Crank Bros Candys or Smartys, and shoes... maybe Diadora Ergos? All of those can be found for cheap on ebay, or on the occasional sale at Performance. Or just buy Performance or Nashbar brand pedals.

If you do go with Nashbar road pedals you can always upgrade to Look later as the cleats are the same so you will already be used to them. I believe that holds true for Performance and Exustar.

Shoes flat out just have to fit or you will hate them. And paying more doesn't guarantee a good fit. Trying on everything you can get your hands on is the way to go.

Yea ive been trying on shoes at my LBS and the sizes that fit change with every brand. I think getting the shoes there is the best bet and then finding a pair of pedals that match is the route that i am going to go
