Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New guy to BF and cycling for that matter.

Hey everybody Just thought I would properly introduce myself since I've mostly been lurking. Anyway here is my ride. It is not impressive I know. 1985 Murray is about the only name that I know it goes by.

Well, let me be the first to actually welcome you to BF.

Your bike is older and no, it's "not impressive" as you point out. It's a department store bike but it is your bike and if you are riding it it is better than any number of more expensive bikes sitting in garages, basements and etc.

Despite the first responses there is good info around here so hang out, post if you want and keep riding.

A warning: If you start riding new stuff it quickly becomes addictive.

Welcome to the forums. You're Murray looks to be in nice condition, but that's a REALLY heavy bike. If you are serious about road biking, you might want to think about moving to a lighter bike with better components.

welcome to BF. like walter said, any bike you get out and ride is better than one you don't.

Welcome and don't let the sarcasm of a few scare you off. Toss some back - that's their idea of "funny".

If your serious about biking (well, you did join BF!) work on the engine, enjoy your Murray, and dream about your next ride. Don't fall prey to the N+1 disease.

The N+1 disease is all that keeps some of us going.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Even if some have a strange way of saying it :-) Yes the bike is very heavy and I was realizing that today while trying to climb up even some small hills. It did manage to get me about 40 miles today so there is always that. Once again thank you all for receiving me as well as you have.

Welcome OP! I like the red & black color scheme on the Murray. My other comment is that seat looks painful! You'd be surprised at what a new modern seat (doesn't have to be expensive) will do to keep you riding longer without discomfort or pain.

Oh, and your choice of background is about the exact opposite of the official Bike Forums bike photo. White garage door, fence, interior wall, are the approved standard backgrounds. A bike posed in front of garbage cans and foyer benches are out.

Looking at the pictures is looks like all your cables are way too loose. especially your rear brake cable. i would get those fixed by your LBS... shouldn't cost too much.

looks like a pretty good bike to start on to me though. welcome.

@KiddSisko, the saddle is definitely murder that is at the top of my new purchase list. The cables are very loose but being held in place by some electrical tape right now hopefully getting fixed tomorrow though.
