Speedplay cleat problem

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speedplay cleat problem

I've had my speedplay X-5 for a week now, gone on 4 rides, and I have problems with the second set of screws (the set of 4, not 3). I had a really hard time not crossthreading them an I'm pretty sure I stripped a few of them. But after 4 rides both of the cleats have moved to one side. I can't get the screws to hold them any tighter and I don't know what to do. Is this a normal problem with speedplays?

I tightened my down as tight as I could physically turn the screw driver I'd say if you tighten it down all the and the screw still moves their stripped probably need new cleats!

Although I want to throw entire pedal system when I have to adjust the cleat positions, I have not had any problem with the cleat not staying at its position. This is new to me. I had 3 cleats and never had the problem you are describing.

Getting them tight enough really isn't a problem with speedplays in my experience.

Overtightening them can be a problem.

Sounds like you messed up the the threads, and need new screws, and possibly a new adapter plate. You can buy both of those without purchasing a whole new cleat.

You could also just try taking the screws out, putting new locktite on them, and reinstalling them and see hwo it works.

Speedplay is all I ride. I have not had problems jsut have been careful when moving them to different shoes. If you watch how you tighten then down you would be fine.

Speedplays, as much as I love them, are horrible when it comes to screws! As previously stated, you are probably in need of some new screws. When you put the new ones in be sure to use some blue loctite to keep them in place, and replace them sooner rather than later when they start to wear.

I have never had a problem either. I have speedplay on both my bikes. I've swapped my cleats at least a half dozen times and they've never stripped or slipped.

Yep, I agree. Anybody want this set of X/whatevers that have been in the top of my bike box for years?
