Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah you need one so you can brag about how much faster you went than the posted limit! I can't believe the stuff I've been reading here tonight!~~ This and so many other remarks I've read here are ridicules! Who that is truly a road bike rider TRYS to keep his speed within the posted limits? No f'ing way. I don't believe you and and some other people here even ride! or if they do it's the sidewalk only. Ahhh! Today I did a 30 mile metro ride in stop and go traffic, had a fair tail wind and on level ground and at times was hitting 36 in a 25 zone, and dude, I'm proud of it. I passed up sooo many cars, some on the left some on the right; the looks as you pass the drivers is priceless. On some I was blowing right between the lanes of cars making a mockery of the crowed streets; road my heart out like I was being chased. At some of the red lights I did stop for a couple women gave me admiring looks like I could ring their bell any day of the week, like your their athletic bad boy. My legs are sore but I had a blast; gave people something to talk about. Now dosen't that sound like fun?

Sounds like a blast! You know I once crossed the Florida state line at 145 MPH in an IROC-Z. My dad was asking me what the tach was reading, to which I responded "I'm doing almost 150, the tach isn't in the red, hope you don't mind if I keep my eyes on the road rather than getting you an accurate reading". I'm sure the look on people's faces as I blew by them was priceless, but I couldn't see it, as it was late at night and I was going too fast. One of my favorite moments in an automobile, my God it was exhilarating!

It was also stupid as hell, but hey, I was 18. I know better now.

That exact same thing happened to me about 30 years ago with a cop using a radar gun in a school zone. I was traveling at about 35mph in a 25 when the cop aimed his gun at me. But I didn't think anything about because A) no speedometer; and B) I'm on a bike! But he came roaring up to me and wrote me a ticket that the judge later through out laughing.

i love it when i ride faster than cars go, especially in heavy traffic. while they are fighting and stressing over every inch of ground, and a free-flying, unthethered cyclist breezes past, you know they feel it!

so what's the big issue here, restricting your freedom on two human-powered wheels, or the school zone thing?

I once rode down a descent, passing motorists, one decided that it wasn't fair a cyclist was faster, so he accelerated and then we both saw the flash of a speed camera... Hee hee! Only his registration plate got photographed, I only laughed

Well dumbass, I can only hope that an ignorant jerk-off like yourself does not procreate one day.
At least it would be one less moronic jack-ass in the world. The only explanation why you would think that putting children at high risk and foregoing their safety is because you have a very low intellegence level, and you are obviously unable to comprehend any logic. A good back hand to your empty head might, I say might make you a bit less arrogant, but I suspect it would not.

But I still think that a good solid back hand is in order for the asinine comments you have made regarding children in a school zone. The only thing I hope or wish for you is that you get struck by someone who has dis-obeyed the law and you suffer some type of consequence. I fear that may be the only way you reform the idiotic, and ignorant behaviour you display, or so claim. You may be just joking, but in any case you are a complete jack-off. If you or someone like you endangered or worse, harmed my children I would make sure you were never able to pedal a bicycle again in your life. I think I rather explained that extremely well, even for an idiot like you!

Yeah but wouldn't you just love to have that picture framed... especially if the photo had speed information printed on it?

I'd say 150 pounds is a pretty good guess of weight for a fit woman+clothes, shoes, helmet, gloves, bike, water, and whatever tools/supplies she might be carrying.

Sir, I hope you have a good day; you will get no abusive remarks back from me. I feel deep sadness for a heart so full of all the anger and hate you have shown us here by your remarks. It must be hard to live with those kind of feelings. I honestly hope you find peace some day.

Energy (in joules) = 1/2 mass * velocity^2

Thus a 150lbs rider+bicycle travelling at around 27MPH will impart around 4896J worth of energy in a collision. That's a fair bit of energy. Just as a comparison, a 5.56 NATO round from an M16 has a muzzle energy of 1712J.

Here's my story on my downhill brush with the law...

There was an old lady killed by a cyclist in Australia a couple of years ago. I could'nt believe it at the time.

I hit a bloke on Chapel St once....stepped out from between two parked cars. I knocked him clean out like Darren Milburn on Steve Silvagni at Optus Oval.

A cyclist killed a pedestrian in Launceston last year.

Vegan, you might have to delve a bit deeper. I have found that people who react like dc70 have had a tragic experience (in this case the scenario might be a child killed in a school zone by a speeding vehicle). Put it down to abusive venting and harrassment caused by a jaundiced viewpoint.

I didn't think that when I wrote my tale that I would have to go into minute detail. Your right though, if the traffic is heavy I'm not going to go barreling down a car crowded child infested street at 35mph or even 25mph for that matter. My radar traffic ticket occured just before school was out and the street traffic was very light with maybe 3 or 4 kids mingling about. But also I did this 30 years ago when I was in my early 20's so the brashness of youth (and I was very brash whether on a bike or in a car-that's another story), so safety was not the thing that I held on to real tight!

Above is another example of why I think some posters here are fakes and don't even really ride road bikes! I ride with up to 3 different clubs and even in the one considered conservitive the standard norm is: Red light- rider up front slows and looks and says "clear" a couple more go through and another calls out "clear" and few pass through; etc. They are all nice, middle aged people; were not jerks.NEVER have I ridden in ANY group where we act as if we are driving cars, cause were not!

In all the club rides I attend, the general behaviour is to actually wait for the light. Sure there are some jerks who actually run them and I've witnessed quite a few near misses which happened even when someone ahead visually "cleared" the intersection. When I was a kid (about 10 years old), I once saw a cyclist get smeared by a gravel truck as he [cyclist] blew the red. That was not a pretty sight. The blood trail went on for about a quarter mile.

Because people are different. It also has to do with the selection process. Maybe you choose to tolerate riding in clubs or with groups of people who don't observe traffic signals. I personally don't so thus our experiences may differ simply because we have chosen different environments.
