Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How do the School Zone 15mph signs read? When Children Present? Does it have actual hours listed? Are there blinking lights when you are supposed to do 15?

Cars that are speeding in a school zone aren't looking to mow down any kiddos either. Glad you didn't get a ticket, I mean I see your rationale, but saying that you didn't intend harm to kids doesn't mean that it couldn't have happened, which is why school zones are slower at certain times of the day anyway.

Around here they are usually marked with times, and have yellow blinking lights.

Well, there you have it. The attraction was mutual, and he'd have used any reason to stop you!

True, but depending on the time of day (e.g. early in the morning) some of the lights where I cycle only change if a car sets off the trip. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately ), me and my bike aren't big enough to trip them. I could be stuck waiting a long for a car to show up - so I usually stop, make sure no cars are around, and proceed through.

Oh, and actually stop signs don't really mean stop all of the time either ... once you've stopped it's okay to start again

Having a little kid once I can tell you they are unpredictable and there is a reason for the School Zone. Next, I can guarantee you that if someone hit one of my 7 year old, 60 lbs nieces doing 27mph with a bike that that person’s nightmare would begin after the judicial system was through with them. Your actions deserved a ticket. I’d have written you one.

Its amazing how we complain about not being respected by motorist especially when asserting our right to be on the road then break rules because we don't think they should apply to us. Think of it this way: would I do this in my car? I always hate seeing a group of riders where the tail end of the group flagrantly goes through a red light.

hey
so....how does the cop know your real address and what not if you don't have your ID on you? Can't you just say my name's like...shoot...i dunno...Mike Lee (generic american and asian name) and some false address, then take the ticket and go do a century so the officer'd get tired of following you around to make sure you're atleast going to the right address?

I think this is a more valid comparison than an M16 round!
I have made that comparison in previous threads. However that would not be relevant in this one.

Actually, I assumed she plus the bike equalled 150lbs. FWIW, the FAA assumes we all weigh 170lbs.

Let's see, you were exceeding the speed limit in a school zone. Why are you surprised?

Cycleprincess... I would have made him chase me! The dirvers aren't going to respect you any less by breaking the laws than they already do, they just want us out of their way. Should have made him him get his lazy butt out of the car! Then dropped him like a bad habit. Most cops I know are too fat out of shape to do anything on foot other than walk into a donut or pizza shop. Had a park cop chase me while I had my dog out with a mountain bike past closing hours. He was trying to stop us on the bike path with his car! We hit the dirt; he went off the road too but not for long; he must have realized it was a lost cause. Laughed my butt off most of the way home! I think my dog even had fun.

Haha, me thinks I'll go taunt some mall cops today, ...maybe borrow my friends LeToy 4 and take it IN the mall for a spin.- Get bro to come along and wait @ the doors to let me out. Then pass him the Toy 4 and switch to my offroad racing bike and continue the chase in the streets!

I miss being a kid

Be great to see that on one of these "worlds worst police chases 5" shows. A mtbike is probably the best getaway tool you can use. Faster than running and much more mobile than a car. I don't think I'll pick a fight with a cop to find out though...

My friend and I actually were getting chased down by about six different squad cars one night... we were both on mountain bikes and managed to lose the cops pretty fast.

In the city, you can lose cops pretty easily through the traffic and sidewalks. Then again, in LA, they shoot now, ask questions later.

Check the laws in your state in WI the ticket for a bike on the books is a lot less the for a motorist.

talked with the prosecutor/whatever guy at court before setting the court date. he checked the books. "well, its really not in here. a traffic violation is a traffic violation so its still 250$"

Sorry if you didn't understand the context. I was addressing speeding and traffic lights and signs as others have brought up. The example of a group getting cut off by a traffic light is a case in point. So would you speed in your car, especially in zones marked for schools, crossing areas, etc.? Would you also not stop for traffic lights or stop signs while in your car?
