Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

An ad for > $200 had better show some pictures.

Ignore it.

Got pics this morning in an email. I'm going to go check it out in person. CL ad says that price is negotiable. Should I make an offer below the asking price if the bike is in good condition? Or is $1700 a fair deal, assuming that there are no major issues?

That price seems high to me. Just because he paid $1,700 originally for a bike and bought $2,000 worth of upgrades; that doesn't mean it's worth $4,000. (as he implies.) Especially if the old components don't come with the deal. (not that you'd want them.)

It's a lower-range frame with higher-end components. Kindof like an '84 Toyota with an expensive set of wheels.

Bikes: A dozen or so.

I wouldn't call it a deal until the price drops below $1200. Even then, it's a tough call.
