I don't like any of the paint schemes for the CAAD12. Waiting on the CAAD13.....

I'm nearly done with this build. Yes, I posted it above some time ago. But it is nearly ready to ride, it has already had a 2 mile shake down. Just some minor adjustments needed, and bar tape. It has SRAM Red 53/39 crankset, Force 2x10 brifters, Rival FD and RD, and 12 to 30 cassette. Without bar tape, comes in at 18 lbs 5 oz... |

I had a vintage steel frame built up with modern components that I had been training for a Century on this year, but I cracked the frame through the bottom bracket casting with only a few weeks until the ride. I was devastated, and didn't have much budget for a replacement frame, having just spent a large sum on a vacation and an saving for an upcoming carbon endurance bike purchase. So I went on eBay and found a slightly scratched up used CAAD9 frameset from 2008 (American-made, wishbone rear stays, threaded bottom bracket) for a couple hundred bucks, and built it up with the components from the broken bike.
I have to say, I was less than enthusiastic about this project. The frame was a cheap stop-gap measure to just keep me riding. But holy crap, this bike rides nicely! I dare say it is one of the best rides I've experienced, and I've been riding a lot of multi-thousand dollar carbon bikes lately. A decade-plus-old aluminum racing bike isn't necessarily the first choice that many would think of for a Century ride, but I was able to relax my rider position quite a bit using spacers and an appropriate stem. The bike has 700x25's on it at 95 psi and a carbon fork, and I am finding it quite comfortable over bumpy pavement. And it just accelerates and handles curves so beautifully... It's enough to make me look past the ugly early 2000's decal job and frame scrapes. Truly a joy to ride! |

My CAAD9 has been treating me right for 9-10 years now.

CAAD13? I’ve never seen a Cannondale with welds that chunky. What is it really?

That would be a Caad13. Those are just the welds on the new tube shapes.
But that's not a CAAD... |

So here's my bike - a 2019 CAAD12/Ultegra, and I have a question about wheel aesthetics. I'm planning to have alloy wheels built for me. What I want to know is, do I get rims with traditional brake tracks (HED Belgium Plus, or Easton R90) or blacked out tracks (Boyd Altamont Ceramic). Which, in your subjective opinion, do you think looks better on this bike?

I did think the CAAD12 was a pretty bike. I'll keep my CAAD9 though. |

Fresh off a 30 mile ride, fast group, but they slowed as needed for my fat butt... I couldn't have hung with this group on my other old steel bike... Fun bike... |
I'm not liking the colours and graphics on the 2020 range and much prefer the large and iconic 'cannondale' on the downtube. So on 'Black Friday' I picked up a 2019 CAAD Optimo Tiagra in acid green and yesterday I bought a 2019 CAAD12 105 in black. Say a little prayer for me boys because I haven't told Mrs.Welshboy about the latter yet.

I totally agree on the downtube. Especially with the new font. That Rapha Team version is super hot.

My first real road bike. Want to change the stem but other than that she works well. When I replace her I’ll prolly keep her and turn her into a project bike. |
