From a triple to a double?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

From a triple to a double?

I'm thinking of switching my triple crank out for a double. I've got Shimano 105 shifters. Can I just use the same shifters and set the Der stops to accommodate the double or do I need to get new shifters? I assume I can use the same front Der (Shimano Tiagra)?

You can use the same shifters.

You can also use the same deraileurs.

If you want to get the full weight advantage, you'll want to get a short cage rear derailleur.

I've done this. It works, but not ideally. The click points are not in the exact spot where they would be if it were a double shifter, and hence the "trim" is not as good, which means you might get more chain rub at times. I would not recommend it for road racing but if you are just riding around then go for it.

Just riding around, no racing for me. I'm still on the fence about it. I also use that bike to tow a trailer with my kids in it and it's really nice to have a stump puller gear for the hills.

I just performed this procedure. I replaced the FD as well. I can second what Grumpy said. The indexing isn't quite right. It works, but you'll have to use the trim feature more than you should have to.

I have an Ultegra groupset by the way.

I have a 52/42/30 on my Interloc and a 50/34 on my ParkPre. The 50/34 uses a triple shifter for the front and I've been able to tune it just fine. I've found the biggest challenge is to have enough outboard movement of the FD to allow you to have the trim when on the big ring, without dropping the chain when you shift up to the big ring.

What I've found about my triple is that the 42-tooth middle ring covers a wide range on either side of my average speed but it doesn't give me much gearing for the steeper hills in the area, so the 30 tooth gets a fair amount of work on a normal ride. Unless you put a mountain cogset on the back with the compact, you might not be able to achieve the low gear you need to get you and the trailer up the hill.

I swapped a 105 triple for a SRAM compact crankset and it worked fine. My friend was able to get the front dr to shift without any issues or chain-rub. It's not a perfect setup but it worked well. I also had an Ultegra long cage rear dr and could have accomodated larger cassette if necessary. Swapped it all out for SRAM but the front shifting on the 105 double conversion was fine.

my 105 shifters documents said they were triple and double. they don't have double specific shifters. it is the prvious 5600 model.

If you are just riding around...may I ask then why you are trying to do this swap? If the swap does not make sense, there really is no reason do such a thing.
