You three.

I have a lot of tattoos, have a great corporate job, and make a decent living. When I have long sleeves on nobody knows any different.

OP - I have 2 sleeves. Here's me (2nd from right)

I have crashed a few times and you will lose ink. I have a spot on both elbows haha. However, wearing arm coolers (Google: De Soto Arm Coolers) ma help. The bigger issue is the sun and fading. Arm coolers will help with that. However, if you're a perfectionist you may not want to do it hah. Good luck.

When I'm elected president, i'll promise to only wear a suit for weddings and funerals

speaking of presidents, you should know that more than one has been inked and/or branded by various fraternal and military organizations before being elected.

I bet none of them had "sleeves"...

Also, it looks like Kelly Osborne has decided get most of her her tats lazered off. Luckily she doesn't have any extensive ones that can't be removed, like a sleeve. Those are perminant.

I've yet to meet anyone else with this as a tattoo. If supporting my heritage makes me a herd animal or a person unworthy to work for you then so be it. I could care less what people think of what I do with my body.

P.S. I'll probably only get one other tattoo. It will be the M-Dot when I've earned it.

So long as people can't tell the difference when it matters, you can do anything you want. If you don't pay attention to the first clues you project to people who don't know you yet, there will sometimes be a price to pay.

One of the other social rules we have (and this is a far stronger one than any regarding tats), is that you need to have teeth. I managed to knock out my teeth twice in one year back when I was in college. The second time, I decided I wasn't going to eff around with fixing something that was going to keep getting broken. If you really want to scare the crap out of people, I recommend doing what I did and walk around without front teeth. That I had a shaved head and liked to wear a sleeveless denim jacket did not help.

After a month, I realized I had to do something, so I have fake ones that look better than the real ones ever did. Thankfully, I did not get teeth made of surgical steel which I thought were both functional and cool. Actually, I still think that. But there ain't no way I'd go that route.

Slowandsteady,

I worked for a medical device company in sales and management, Enterprise as a high level employee, and have held other high end sales jobs with sleeves. No biggy. Most of the places I worked for made us wear long sleeves anyways. I will have to say, neck and hands are job killers.

I now own a successful business of my own. I truly think some people that show up to my studio/shop are a bit surprised when they see my arms. A few minutes with me, my knowledge and professionalism supersedes my tatttoos.

I have crashed on my left arm. It did lighten up the color a little. No big deal. I am almost 40, so I really don't care.

A little embarassed about my weight in this pic but here I am from about a month ago. I won't do my legs (my wife likes them sexy and clean!). ;)

Just like it is now appropriate for a woman to wear pants when it once not acceptable, it may one day be acceptable to sport inked skin where ever you like in whatever job you like. But that day isn't today.

Why do you think the president of the US almost always wears a conservative suit? Does the color grey or blue make him more effective as a president? Or do the American people expect that their leader looks a certain way?

Bingo.

penis pump salesman?

^^^He is referring to my notion that people are herd animals and now that tattoos have become somewhat more acceptable, everyone's uncle's niece's cousin is sporting ink. And I don't think I said a word about his hire-ability.

I guess everyone is ready for a picture of the Cinelli tatoo on my 63 year old ass? Huh???

:)

Blackdays 10-07-10 08:05 PM

The cost of sleeves alone is enough to not encourage me to get one.

I'm thinking a smaller shoulder tattoo.

Yaniel 10-07-10 08:22 PM

while I wouldn't get a tattoo, I think well done ones look pretty good. Everyone talking about a sleeve not allowing you to get a job... I guess you've never heard of a long sleeve shirt? I'm pretty sure most lawyers, doctors, and corporate type workers can go their whole career without anyone noticing any ink on their arms if they wanted.

When I first saw this, I knew it bugged me for some reason, but it took a couple hours for it to click. Getting a tattoo supporting Jewish heritage is like celebrating a period of sobriety by gettin' good and likker'd up. Did you have a BLT to celebrate the completion of your Jewish tattoo as well?

thirdgenbird 10-07-10 09:24 PM

ive got a tattoo on the top of my foot. i i am a sandal kind of guy on the weekends and i dont foresee a professional situation arising that would require me to remove both my shoes and socks.

Corporate Dress Codes and tattoos

A study by Careerbuilders shows the perils of tattoos for aspiring professionals, and confirms the conventional wisdom that tattoos are a sign of immaturity, bad judgment and bad taste:
  • Over 42 percent of managers said their opinion of someone would be lowered by that person's visible body art. Personally, I think that the actual figure is much higher.
  • Three out of four respondents believe that visible tattoos are unprofessional.
You don't have look hard to find hundreds of corporations which have banned employees with tattoos. San Bernardino County California, bars all employees from wearing denim, having visible tattoos, and any piercing in the nose, lip, or tongue that contains jewelry.
In sum, tattoos send a message to corporate America that you are ignorant, low-income, that you have have bad taste, and worst of all, that you may have a criminal record.
