Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Eff the tube.

Stuff grass in the tire...

By the way. You have used your one and only call of shame card and you have to carry repair kit.

Poor kid ( I assume he or she is a kid, I cannot fathom an adult being so unprepared on the road), posted here expecting a little sympathy and gets.....hammered.
But why oh why would you go on a 40 mile ride or any ride for that matter without the basic tools to repair or fix common road problems? Live and learn.

Where's the fun in that?

This tubeless tire technology makes tubulars seem reasonable.

Just in case no one has mentioned it yet:
  • You should have easily dodged both the pothole and the rock
  • You should have been prepared to fix a flat
  • You can put a tube in a tubeless tire
  • If you have a premium AAA membership, they'll bail you out

I wouldn't have believed it myself, but once I found myself selecting between siding into a car, crashing into an eager pedestrian crossing the road, and a pothole. The end result was two flat tires. Luckily I always carry two tubes.

Couple of weeks ago I took my newly built up bike for its maiden voyage. I have a spare tube, patch kit and tire levers in a saddle bag and a frame pump attached to my other bike on which I haven't had a flat in 4 years. I decided not to bother putting the saddle bag on my new bike for its first ride of course as the fates would have it I flatted. Had to walk about 30 minutes in road shoes which destroyed a new pair of iClic cleats

I truly dread the day that I have to make the call of shame. It will have to be one helluva doozy, as I will never hear the end of it....

Correct. Better to wait 45 minutes than to add a few grams to the bike.

By the way, I see no one mentioned that you need a tube and some type of inflation system in case of emergencies.

I love this place...

I blame it on cell phone technology and the human condition of laziness...

Why be bothered to carry an extra 1 lb of necessary gear when you can leave it at home, and then have the capability to bother someone else directly to help you out when your laziness bites you in the ass?

If I was your brother, I would have charged you for time and gas to pick your ass up. A tube costs $4.50, and a tube kit about the same. I'm sure when you factor wasted time into it, your no-brainer stunt probably cost about $75.00. From the apparent anguish experienced, the lost "opportunity cost" for a nice ride was worth a bunch. But the good news is this: The education you're getting here is priceless.

Think about life 25 years ago: If you were dumb enough to go on a long ride without a tube and kit, where would you be?

Oh, I know...you would probably have been the guy who carried a dime...

What you need is a ride to namby pamby land, jackwagon... (I love that commercial)

lol.
I can see myself in the OPs situation and trying that.

For me, this would mean not only the flat, but busted toes and skinned knees as well!

(too fat and slow)

Why in the world would someone post this here?

Maybe the OP does need a ride to namby pamby land.

HTFU and fix your own flats, and even if you have to call for a ride,
DON'T Post it here.

We are a tough hard bunch.
This is the 41, not foo!

I carry a pump and 2 spare tubes on all rides. I don't use co2 anymore, just don't see the need for myself.
