How important is bike sizing? <<-- Serious dilemma.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm 5'11" with 31 inches floor to crotch.
One say holly crap, other one said abnormal proportions? I have to add +1 on these. Hope you did not pay for the fitting, and i would not come back to the store where u got this, good price? maybe, bad idea? yes. Didn't even know they did stem necks that long, I'm impressed. Is not better just go plain flat bars with that fitting?

Good luck

I got it through Craigslist ($375), and I've ridden it 1,600 miles so far, and it fits perfectly. There is almost no difference in measurements (seat to handlebar, etc.) compared with my last 58 cm bike (on my 58, the seat post was all the way down).

The stem is a Technomic -- I have it raised that much because I get neck pain if it's lower.

I find this bike very comfortable.

True. Most shops lie to customers to liquidate stock.

That stem looks like it came off the Nautilus.

Guys and Gals,

All fitment threads go down the same road (pardon the pun). I'm 6'0 and ride a 58.....Well I'm 6'0 and ride a 56.....

The bottom line is that every bike fits differently, and the fitments are almost infinite when you take into account seat positioning, stem length, even where the hoods are clamped to the bar.

The ONLY thing you can do to guarantee a good fit is to go to the LBS, and take the time to get properly fitted. It is the ONLY way. Do it any other way, and you're going into a purchase blind.

Should you make a blind purchase, sure, you can probably tweak it to make it work, but only thru trial and error, and that's assuming its salvagable.

Do yourself a favor, just go to the shop.

I'm 5'11 myself on a 56cm, and when I went to get it fit, the shop said I should think of moving down to a 54cm.

That's incorrect. Generally, you will want to run a smaller frame as you become more flexible. You are correct in assuming that you can get a longer stem, and while there are practical limitations on that, you are not in danger of exceeding them in the length range mentioned.

Also, as frame dimensions go, the differences between a sizes 56 and 54 usually minor on modern frames. I will usually go a size down rather than a size up since the the head tube length can differ by as much a 3cm, while the top tube length may be as little a as .5 cm difference on those two sizes.
