The biggest challenge to going pro?
Overcoming distractions
I get distracted easily. I don't know how TDF riders keep focused at the end of those mountain stages, and I if I were to see a remote control helicopter hovering just feet about the peloton, well I would surely crash.
Luckily, I won't be racing in the TdF anytime soon.

I also believe it's genetics, motivation, and support. Geography might have a little influence too.
I'm hoping i can marry another endurance athlete and maybe if that continues for the next 4 or 5 generations my family might have their first champion!

Unfortunately statistics indicate that your offspring are far more likely to be closer to average than farther from average.

I'm the kid who had the newspaper route when he was 11. While I may be genetically incapable of turning pro, but I suspect I'm also genetically incapable of becoming poor. Of course life is like bicycle racing.
It's never too late to get dropped.

But that's the norm around here...

I disagree. I think the biggest shot is getting the enviromental stuff lined up where a person has the opportunity and support to try. I bet there are at least 20x as many people who are genetically capable of being an international pro as there are international pros.

The team cars flying by at ludicrous speeds are a lot more distracting. For the cyclists, I don't think it matters. Can you really form a coherent thought with your heart trying to jump out of your chest?
