Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need to worry?

So I was cleaning my bike and noticed a chip on the bottom of the stays.. is it something to be concerned about?? Frame is not compromised right?

I was about to reply with the standard  ... but I'm not too sure here.

It looks more serious than just a paint chip.

Are any of the fibers broken? If not, put some clear nail polish or epoxy over it and ride.

If you see broken fibers, consult an expert in the area (Calfee, for example) of fiber building and repair.

To be honest, your first picture makes me feel like it's just a paint chip. No blatantly obvious broken fibers...

Find an expert to ensure you aggressively arrest the damage now.

I know someone who had a case of chain suck on his new Jamis bike, and the damage looked like it went deeper than the paint. Jamis told him that the chainstays are really sturdy and can handle a couple of chain sucks. Since your damage doesn't look so bad, and it is in an area of the bike where tubes intersect that should already be reinforced, I would put clear nail polish over it and leave it alone.

How was it damaged? Is the frame still under warranty?

His is not in the chain area at all.

Completely wrong side of the bike. Note the seat post and brake caliper.

I think Fuji will tell you to go to a local authorized reseller to look at the frame. Based on the pictures, I don't think it will be covered under the warranty. Also, warranties for paint finish are usually much shorter than the frame warranty.

Seriously. Listen to me. Look at it. Are there any cut carbon threads? No, OK, just what I thought. Put nail polish over the area. Ride.

I know, but it is in an area that is usually reinforced. I just used the Jamis case as an example.
