Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Quality new SQ taper 53/39 cranksets?

Anyone know where I can find one? I'm looking for Ultegra level or better, for a 9spd setup. I'm not a fan of buying anything SQ tapered used for obvious reasons. I have been looking at Sugino cranks but am a bit leery of them for their low price and light weight (cheap light strong-pick two)... not to mention they wouldn't look that great on my bike w/ all the polished stuff I have (the Sugs are black)

Anyways any recommendations?

Jon

I should add before anyone tells me to go ISIS/Octalink I want square because I just had to blow money on a new UN72 SQ BB since the splined drive side flange SHEARED off the old one when I tightened it down! Plus I don't care near enough about SQ vs. ISIS/Octalink to feel the need to buy a new BB with the crank.

Check out the IRD Mosaic...

Or the ones from Stronglight: Speedlight, Mygal, and Impact.

The IRD cranks list for $400. The Stronglights are relatively pricey because they are imported but on the whole, not too bad. The Speedlights seem to run around US$230, the Mygals around $170 and the Impacts around $80. Check out XXCycle.Com.

Keep in mind that the crankset determines what bottom bracket spindle length you need and they aren't all the same.

I don't understand. I think these would work with 8sp and 7sp too. Cranks are generally speaking agnostic about such things.

Anyone have any good info on the Sugino cranksets? I am tempted to try them... the price is right, but can't really find any reviews. I am also a bit partial to Shimano stuff since its been so good to me so far.

Check E-bay; seriously. You can find great deals on NOS cranks all the time. I've got one of the Stronglight Speedlights, a pair of Stronglight Ironlights (odd name), and a pair of Ritchey cranks. All NOS from E-bay, picked up for super cheap prices.

Both the Stronglights are very nice cranks. The Ironlights have a more greay/dark finish, and the Speedlights have a much shinier silver finish. The Ironlights are a little lighter.

www.thorusa.com used to have some of them, but not sure if he does any longer.

Another place to get Stronglight cranks, as well as other hard-to-find stuff, is www.giroposte.com
