Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Broken Carbon Seatposts...

If you got pictures, post them.

All the pics I've seen online so far have been of the clamping systems failing
(some, not even carbon parts, but the metal clamp braking).

I'd especially like to see pics of the posts themselves broken.

I've also noted that most of the pics I've seen are from years ago.
This seems to have happened more back then, but not as much now
(or at least, it's not being posted as much now).

Thanks for any submissions.

Appears so - that more recent CF forks and seat posts are so much better built...visually the forks look more robust.
- similar to how aluminum bikes improved from gluing them in the late 80s.

I don't have my broken carbon seatpost anymore. Mine was the seatpost itself, and it broke in 2004 days before leaving on a 3-month tour. Good thing it was discovered then on not shortly after starting the tour!!!

I just threw mine out, guess I should have taken a picture. It was severed about 3/4 of the way around, right at the level of the clamp. The part not severed was the back. Clamp opening was in back.

I noticed it when I picked the bike up by the saddle and it felt springy.

Post was an Easton Carbon setback post, not sure of model, about 8 years old, I weigh 110.

Same sort of situation with mine ... same brand of post ... and at the time I weighed about 125 lbs.

BTW...thanks to everybody who's contributed to the thread.
Seems that older posts are questionable (especially Easton).

During a recent criterium. The entire leading group was never heard from again.

Even if carbon posts don't break as often as people think, most of the time they are just as heavy or heavier than Thomson posts. Just get a Thomson and stop obsessing.

Yep. Even if carbon posts don't break "that often", they're heavier and break a lot more often than Thomson or other quality aluminum posts do.

Seems like the "old wive's tale" debunking didn't have the intended effect...

The only time I care about weight much is when I can remove pieces that are like anchors on my bike (like my OEM bits)
and where I can make a substantial improvement (like lopping off 2lbs off my bike with a change of wheelset).

It's not "just" the weight and I certainly wouldn't go with carbon if I were a weight weenie, I'd definitely go with aluminum or even Ti.
It's as much aesthetics as it is practicality in my having a proper clamping device for my carbon railed saddle as well.

I'm getting the next best thing to a Thomson; The Cyrano.

And, for as much as some say that carbon doesn't make a difference in ride comfort as opposed to an aluminum,
my stem & bar combo and the rails on my saddle all convinced me that there is more to it than that.

If I did go aluminum, it'd have to be the Cyrano too. It's just gorgeous.

[Note: I'm not Anti-Thomson. I will have a Thomson stem & post for my MTB.]

I'd say he meant "as much as is often alleged".
