Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

it wont work because of the different cable pull ratio. your best bet would be to get a shimano mtb rd

*2 on not working, and to give you the details why:
Shimano 10 speed shifters pull about 2.3mm per click whereas Sram pulls about 3mm and their respective derailleurs have different pull ratios. Shimano moves about 1.7:1 and Sram 1.3/1.

I switched to a Shimano XT Deore RD and a 11-34 IRD cassette. Make sure that you don't get the new 10 speed XT RD.

Nope.

use a 9 speed shimano mountain derailleur and 10 speed cassette (SRAM, Shimano, or IRD) of your choice instead

an Ultegra long cage (RD 6600 GS) meant for a triple set-up may also work.

Shimano 9sp MTB long cage RD and sram or shimano 10sp mtb cassette is the best choice, IMO.

I considered going to an Apex 11-32 cassette and using a 6500 GS RD I have laying around, and found that the long cage helps with the wide crankset spread, but not with the cassette spread - Shimano says it won't handle >27 tooth cogs. Didn't check on the 6600 GS. I ended up deciding to work on leg strength instead.

that was Shimano's spec because their largest road cassette at the time was 27t. the short cage 65/6600 will easily clear 28t. i suspect the gs would clear 32t with the B screw adjusted all the way in.
