Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SRAM S30 AL Sprint Wheelset-- any experience?

I have a friend who has access to SRAM wheels at close to wholesale (about 40% off retail, waiting on an exact price from him)

I am considering the SRAM S30 AL Sprint Wheelset. He only gets a discount on SRAM wheels (no Zipp or Mavic)

Anyone have experience with these? (they are the current model on SRAM's site)

Looks like retail is btwn $690-750, so I am guessing the price would be around $450 or so...

Wasn't really considering SRAM, but if it's in this price range, could be worth it....

I just bought the S27 wheelset, quality looks good, havent had a chance to test them out yet. For $450, thats pretty cheap.

Ive been putting on some miles on my S27 AL comp wheelset. I am very very impressed with this wheelset! Ive tested many wheelsets and this one happens to be one of my favorites. Wheels ride very smooth on the road. Ive noticed less buzz in the handlebars compared to my System 30s and much less than the Neuvation R28s, im guessing its due to the smaller bladed spokes, the neuvation having the widest of the 3 wheelsets. Hubs are identical to the S30 Sprint and is also the quietest Ive ever had, almost ninja quiet! Front and rear hubs are easy to service and requires you to set the preload on the hub which is easily done by twisting the hub cap a 120 degrees counter clockwise from full close using the degree markings on the cap. Simple process that takes 2 seconds to do. Some folks tend to over tighten their skewers putting unwanted pressure on the bearings, this preload setup prevents that making for a smoother longer lasting hub! Wheels are smooth and very fast rolling, not a hint of side movement whatsoever! No flex climbing and rock solid bombing down a twistie hill at over 40 mph! Impressive wheelset for the price! 2 thumbs up for this set! Wheelset came in at 1680 grams with tape, very close to their advertised weight of 1620 grams without rim tape.

Might want to consider the S30 AL Race wheels. They are pretty light and not that much more expensive.
